I am trying to figure out the options for 28mm metal minis for the British in the Sudan. I know that some units wore their red uniforms in some battles, but most infantry wore khaki. I have some of the RAFM Soldiers of the Queen minis. Are they appropriate for the red uniformed soldiers with their fancy cuffs? Or would the red uniforms have plain cuffs? Who makes metal Sudan British in khaki? Are any of the Old Glory lines suitable? Thanks so much for your advice.

In case you are not aware, RAFM figures are significantly smaller than newer 28s. Tolerance to this varies, but I just wanted to give you a heads-up in case you were not aware.

There is a list here for a few pointers for which manufacturers to have a look at…

Perry Bros have an extensive Sudan range in metal and plastic.

In addition to the figures from their Sudan Range, British soldiers from Old Glory's Boer War British will also work well: link

The British campaigns in the Sudan split into 2 different eras, the first campaign followed soon after the Anglo-Egyptian War of 1882, and lasted from 1883 to 1885. This first campaign is when your description of a "mix" of British uniforms, mostly khaki but also including red home service dress, was in effect. The later campaign of 1895-1898, was fought all in khaki.

Here's a potentially useful link to the Perry site's "Brief History and Uniform Guide" for 1883-1885 Sudan, which may be worth taking a look at no matter what company's figures you end up using:

+1 Mad Guru. Thank you.

Thanks for the tips and pointers. My RAFM lads may be best at fighting martians since they are a bit stunted. I am thinking that some of those OG Boer British would fit the wallet nicely. That Perry guide is great. So I gather that the Zulu era cuffs had disappeared by the Sudan?

One effect of the British Army's Childers Reforms of 1881 (which carried on the work of the Cardwell Reforms of 1868-1871) was the standardization of facing colors for colors and cuffs. Individual regimental colors were replaced by "national" colors: white for English and Welsh regiments; yellow for Scottish regiments; green for Irish regiments; and blue for regiments with the title "Royal" in their names. I believe the style of the cuffs was also changed from pointed (like those you associate with British uniforms of the Zulu War) to "round", which meant straight across the sleeve (I'm pretty sure it was changed back to the "pointed" style some time around the turn of the 20th Century).
