I came across this video of author Gary Wills going over his process for creating a scenario for the Black Powder rules for a historical battle, in this case the Battle of Villamuriel. I thought it was pretty interesting.

He actually offers a well-considered explanation of the minutia we all should use when we attempt to translate a real battle to the wargame table.
