Was watching 'Super 8' the other day (2011 film set in 1979)

About 2/3rds of the way through there was a homage to a proper full on SF "US army fails to stop the aliens" – tanks being tossed in the air, all the jeeps armed with .50 cals, firing wildly, powerlines going over in showers of sparks, the full monty.

And I thought "I want to do that" – Giant robots stomping houses, tank rounds bouncing off, infantry running about. But what rules?

I'm thinking 2-3 tripods v post Korea stuff. Any ideas that will handle lots v few?

Just repurpose "The Creature that ate Sheboygan". Just substitute Space machines for the monsters. There is also the rules, "It Came from Beyond the Still".

Last Hussar -- in which scale are you planning your adventure? 1/100, 1/72, 1/56, 1/32 ?

Horizon Wars might be worth a look. Another would be Monster Island

10-15mm – Sunjester has 15mm Korean, but I might buy some 10mm stuff in the future.

Writing some ideas down now – US forces (and it's always 'Biddlibong, Idaho' they attack! Aliens in the 50s always seemed to ignore London, Delhi and Peking, as it was called then) are Heavy Tanks, Tanks, Jeeps with .50 cal, Rifle teams, bazooka teams, MG teams, trucks (for infantry transport).

Special Event 'Orders from the Pentagon –
fighter aircraft (a pair of F86 Sabres)
Bomber – B26 (Invader or Marauder!)
Artillery
Civilians

Use a card deck for activation 2-10 player of that suit goes, Court card Aliens go, using a Chit system
chit 1 could be "Turns left then"
because it says 'then' draw another chit
"Moves straight"

Kepp drawing until it doesn't say 'then'.

Some days I really hate the internet. Can't find any references to the below:
I tried to run a convention game, the rules were: Battling Big-uns.
It was shipwrecked pirates landing on a beach in Lilliput and trying to cross the island. They had opportunities to eat breweries (recover some health, gain attack bonuses and run the risk of getting too drunk and falling down), eating farms (recover some health), and collecting gold.

The Lilliputians were having none of it and setup in three lines of foot, horse and cannon. I think the foot moved 1 hex while the pirates moved 3. Oh, and the pirates could battle each other to steal the other's gold, or not get left behind (not enough places on the raft).

Make your own rules. Beer and pretzels rules with a single D6.

JMcCarroll – I have started. I'm using original OGRE as a model (not directly – I haven't seen my copy for ages).

The "Mars Attacks!" Boardgame by Mantic games has everything in one box, including terrain. It is fast, and just plain fun. The expansions have flying saucers and stompy robots. You haven't lived until you've had a game decided by a herd of flaming cattle over-running your troops.

I am having fun writing the special events under 'Messgae from the Pentagon'.

These include a bomber attack, where a line across the table is randomly decided, and everything within 5cm is attacked- Tripods, M48s, bazooka teams, houses! and increasing DefCon, leading to the small possibility that the President will use a 'small'(!) nuclear bomb to ensure the alien threat is contained. Whether that counts as a win, lose or draw is left as an exercise to the players.

Surely, proper military protocol calls for the use of a large nuke warhead, or warheads, "just to be sure"……..
