Are there celebrities participating on TMP, just in stealth mode to hide their identities?

MajorB05 Jan 2021 1:14 p.m. PST

If I told you that, I'd have to shoot you …

If some people are hiding their identities, why would they respond to a poll and thus expose their identities?

Rudysnelson05 Jan 2021 1:34 p.m. PST

I know of a couple of well known authors who visit the site.
I thought you were going to ask about playing games or going to shows.

Bashytubits05 Jan 2021 2:10 p.m. PST

I do not walk amongst you, stroll maybe but nothing so droll as walking.

dapeters05 Jan 2021 2:11 p.m. PST

+1 Parzival, my thought exactly

JimDuncanUK05 Jan 2021 2:39 p.m. PST

In the UK there are several TV shows which often have a number of 'celebrities' present.

I caught a bit of one the other day and I think I may have vaguely recognised one of the 'celebrities'. All the rest were unknown to me.

I think they were 'Z' list or even lower.

raylev305 Jan 2021 2:40 p.m. PST

OK, I'll fess up. I've been playing historical wargames, of course, since 1977.

14Bore05 Jan 2021 2:50 p.m. PST

It's possible and you know as a person who hasn't 1 celebrity signature I wouldn't care what else they did except what games or miniatures they have.
Of course maybe having a bit more cash might be nice stuff I didn't.

It depends … my DNA from 23 and Me says I'm related to Napoleon napoleon on my Father's side (huh?)!?!??! 😱😨😧😦😬 Really I'm not making this up … 🤞 Hope to die if I'm lying !

If so, he'd really be disappointed I only made Captain and not Field Marshal …

Oh, Legion 4, it was a high bar. Don't beat yourself up over it. Please!

Rudysnelson05 Jan 2021 4:11 p.m. PST

When I was in the Army, I played war games, Bar Lev, with the nephew of King Hassan of Jordan. He is a cousin to the current king.
Most of us have heard the story about an actor who had a vast collection of GW and elves in general.
As a frequent vendor in the past at media shows, I talked to several actors who played fast play games at shows. They indicated that many such events were small in a controlled private setting. Think of Will Wheaton in the Big Bang Theory having celebrities at his house playing a game.

At a Dragoncon (Atlanta) in IIRC 1993 or '94 I had
both David Drake (Hammer's Slammers and other fiction)
and Tom Clancy in a Napoleonic game.

I was concerned that the other players would be
focused on the 'celebs' but they weren't. Focused
on winning…

Wackmole905 Jan 2021 6:16 p.m. PST

I uses to work a great many Comic book/Sci_Fi Conventions and you would be amazed at the number of stars and Creator who walk freely in the crowd. I meet Frank Frazetta one time and he was amazed I know who he was. I once saw Leonard Nimoy commonly strolling through the Dealer room and No one recognized him or they were afraid to come up to him.

John the OFM05 Jan 2021 6:47 p.m. PST

I can name an author of several very good books on the AWI, including some authoritative Ospreys, who used to frequent TMP. Supercilious Maximus was his nom de TMP.
Unfortunately he was kicked off for verbal jousting with someone here who couldn't hold his pencil. Pretty innocuous retort, really. Arched eyebrow! Fetch the smelling salts! But he disagreed with a Golden Boy.

One less (fewer?) "celebrity". Our loss.

Wolfhag05 Jan 2021 9:03 p.m. PST

I ran an ACW "Battle of the Crater" game at a convention in SF. The players included Frank Chadwick and Dana Lombardy (game and book publisher, and media historical commentator).

In 1972 I was part of a high-level logistical war game exercise at HQ USMC in Quantico (I was a low-level participant/messenger). I was an aide to Major Joseph Hoar at the time. His career progressed to the point that he got his 4th star and was CENTCOM Commander from 1991-1994 after Gen Norman Schwartzkopf. He was a great guy who took interest in me and submitted an application to the Naval Academy Prep School at Bainbridge. Unfortunately, before it went through I was given a TS clearance and sent to an Army base at Fort Meade. I've remained in contact with him over the years but he is about 85 now.

I hope to be a celebrity soon (I'm close to solving Perpetual Motion), so y'all are forewarned… ;-)

Kevin C05 Jan 2021 11:27 p.m. PST

I have spent far more money on Old Glory Miniatures over the years than I have on going to the theater or renting videos, so I would count the owner of Old Glory as a celebrity.

My real name is Hilary Clinton.

A: Yes,obviously …

B: define celebrity. Also obviously.

The value of B affects the degree of A.

You never know who might be lurking out there. Robin Williams was into fantasy/SF minis if I remember correctly.

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP06 Jan 2021 8:19 a.m. PST

Celebrities? Even if I knew everyone's real name, how would I know? My news feed is cluttered with announcements that people I never heard of are getting married or divorced or expressing some political opinion--and the only way I know they're famous is that otherwise, no one would write such articles.

Sundance06 Jan 2021 8:51 a.m. PST

OFM, I met Supercilious at the small con in Havre de Grace, MD (don't remember the name offhand). We had tables in the flea market. Great guy – spoke with him at some length throughout the day.

I met Cory Wells of Three Dog Night playing Air Force by mail (yes, snail mail, back in the day). We got to be friends and were right up until he passed away. Another great guy. He even wrote back to my then 9-year-old daughter after she sent him a thank you note for giving her tickets to see him in concert. He was very interested in miniatures, and had gone to a con once to try it out. Had one of the worst experiences of his life because of the players in the game he was in and never looked back. He felt he never had problems like that with boardgamers.

Wolfhag06 Jan 2021 9:39 a.m. PST

IIRC Robin Williams was into military miniatures and had a real WWII Russian antitank gun. He bought tanks from a store in Tiburon, CA.

I played an email game with Cory Wells, he was also into ASL too and had gamers attend his concerts backstage.

Not a celebrity as such, but I was mortified to write an explanation of the influences and background of the writing of Warhammer 40K Rogue Trader on here, which was replied to by Rick Priestley. He was actually very polite and didn't tell me off for talking Bleeped text.

Cerdic06 Jan 2021 2:32 p.m. PST

Well, someone was bound to find out eventually. I am Kylie Minogue!

epturner06 Jan 2021 4:32 p.m. PST

Hey Russ!

You'd be even more of a celebrity if a couple of us could get you to do some spins of those Paris Mob moulds.

Just saying.

Cheers;

Thank you ! 😎 I have not really been
too upset with that thought ! But as I said, Napoleon's DNA was found in my Father's DNA. I've never met the man ! 😁

I've never met Napoleon … but I knew my Father very well ! 😉

I'm good with it! I love OG!

epturner07 Jan 2021 4:51 p.m. PST

Russ;
I will PM you. John The OFM, myself, and a couple of others are looking for a pile of them.

Between the 1798 Irish Rebellion, the French Revolutionary War, and a couple of other projects unique to our group, we think those figures would be just the thing.

And yes, like raylev3, I love your figures too…

Who cares about celebrities. Didn't we fight a war so we wouldn't have celebrities. Oh wait, that was against royalty. Either way, screw them both.
