I remarked some weeks ago that I would post an updated version of Contemporary British Army pictures 'from about 1790 to 1820, and here they are.

I will start though with the schematic chart that I made some time ago, which I have also amended.

Please refrain from posting any comments on this thread until I have posted all of about 60 pictures, each containing several examples from each Regiment.

When I have finished posting said pictures, I will indicate by using the word 'FINISHED' Then, by all means, post your thoughts and critiques. Please, don't hold back, because your input, no matter how critical will be most welcome.

PS. I'll be posting the Cavalry, Militia/Volunteer/Fencible units and Indian Regiments in a similar vein. I'll also be posting examples of surviving uniform and many other items of interest over the coming months.

So I'll start with the Uniform Schematic:

And now the pictures:

FINISHED :)

So. on examining these miniatures, it seems that the De Bosset/ Hamilton-Smith charts are in error with the 30th, 31st, 38th, 58th, 70th, 98th and may also be in error where the 100th and 103rd are concerned. More evidence is needed with these last two Regiments.

The 30th, 31st, 38th, 58th, 70th, 98th have all been revised on my Uniform Schematic.

congratulations, you should publish a book

I do it for all you Military History lovers out there Von'. If I make just one person's research easier then I've done my job with satisfaction.

Very good – what is the reasoning behind units featured and not featured?

Allan F Mountford03 Jan 2021 3:00 a.m. PST

Excellent work there Dibble!
Ditto to von W's comment.

That's a labor of love.

Fabulous resource. It's especially interesting how much variation there was in the greens, buffs and yellows.

Terrific- well done! A really useful resource.

The lack of reliable evidence is the main reason for there being about 6 Regiments missing. :(

That's an extraordinary effort. If not publishable then definitely Blog-able (that's likely not a word). Thanks for your efforts and desire to share with the community.

Just an Errata:

I have this gentleman posted among the 7th Royal Fusiliers.

He is in fact of the 42nd Royal Glamorgan Regiment of Militia.

Hi Dibble, as for the Royal Artillery section, where is you mind me asking did you find/acquire the 3rd portrait on the 2nd row?

Cheers Paul

I'm sorry but I don't remember. I do so like Buncombe Silhouettes so he's probably from a source that I searched at some time. But I'll check my silhouette reference books at home just in case I got the picture from there.

Those schematics need updating because for example, the 70th's lace was spaced in pairs, not singles. I stated that the 70th's was updated but it hasn't been.

TangoOneThreeAlpha and Brechtel198.

Thanks for you kind responses chaps!

I'll be posting one or two more interesting contemporary pictures later in the week.
