Would any of JEB Stuarts's cavalry regiments during the Gettysburg campaign have carried the First National Flag or would they all have carried the ANV Battle Flag? |

Great question. It is possible that some cavalry would have carried the First National Flag – Mosby's Rangers did – but I suspect the ANV Battle Flag would be more common Interestingly, although by Gettysburg the Second National Flag had become official issue it apparently was very rarely carried by units, mostly being used for government buildings – never caught on with the troops |

link The webpage to which the link will direct one is the best info I've found on the subject of ANV flags (unit colors) in brief. There is no mention of the First National Flag and the cavalry comes in for very brief mention, almost all of which supports the issue to some cavalry units of infantry colors, which the author suggests were merely because the requester asked for a 'battle flag.' |

I went through my files and found no mention of any Confederate cavalry unit in Stuart's command carrying a First National during the Gettysburg campaign. However, there were variations in the pattern of the ANV battleflags that were in use. If you have any specific regiments in mind I'll see if I can find any particular details for these units. |

Many thanks for the information. I am happy enough to go with the ANV Battle Flag for my troops. |

The most likely exceptions would be the two regiments just recently brought up from North Carolina. |

At least one of these two NC regiments (4th and 5th NC Cav) was using an ANV 2nd Bunting Pattern Battle Flag from 1862. link |
