"As diplomatic and trade tensions boil over between China and Australia, Liberal National MP George Christensen called on his government to seriously consider officially recognizing Taiwan. Since Australia began to issue calls in April for an investigation into the origins of the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak in China, relations between the two nations have rapidly deteriorated. Chinese authorities this year have imposed tariffs on Australian barley, banned certain beef slaughterhouses, expanded bans and tariffs to red wine and timber, and recently suspended coal imports. On Tuesday (Dec. 15), Sky News cited Christensen as saying that as China attempts to send a strong message to countries around the world to fall in line with its agenda, it has turned Australia into a "guinea pig." Christensen claimed that "China is giving us a big shake in order to spook other countries from doing things which China might not be happy with including domestic laws that they're not happy with."…" Main page link Amicalement Armand

It would be interesting to see happen but I'd never put money on it. Looking at the 14 countries recognizing Taiwan I don't think China will be changing it's strategy any time soon. Considering the countries listed I'm surprised many of them don't change their view when the Chinese flag comes sailing by. link |

Of course China doesn't want anyone investigating the outbreak of COVID-19, because they are responsible for unleashing a deadly virus on the world from their bio weapons lab in Wuhan. Why does the press put the blame for the virus elsewhere? Because they are too busy playing politics and doing exactly what their Chinese masters want. |

As much as I am anti-China, Australia Unilaterally recognising Taiwan would be a stupid move and do nothing for the Taiwanese. Note Australia recently refused to join USA for Freedom of Navigation Ops in SC Sea. So why on earth would they change direction on Taiwan when the US won't? |

So why on earth would they change direction on Taiwan when the US won't? It would be the ultimate "we aren't lackeys of those Yanks!" statement. |

I was under the impression that the Nav Ops by Oz, with the USA had been finally approved and was going forward, or already did, after first refusing to do so. Ah, yes, looks like they did on Oct. 19, 2020: link The USN also just sailed through the Taiwan Strait twice in Dec. 2020: link |

It won't happen. Christensen is all bluff and bluster- he knows the government hasn't the backbone to do it, but making the noise plays well with the voters who got him in. If we want to send a message to the PRC all we have to do is stop selling iron ore, bauxite and other minerals to them and reciprocate the tariffs. But then the money from the miners and big retailers would fail to appear in the party bank accounts, so that won't happen either. |

Dal Gavan, nail hit on the head. Australia will just take its spanking from China but core business interests will not be sacrificed. |

You could say the same about the US, especially in the upcoming year … |
