A quick technical note:
The newer straws with cornstarch based plastic do not work well for this. They tend to look tan and grainy.

So, go out and collect old plastic ones out in the wild, i.e. litter off the ground.

Disposable chopsticks that are peeled, split, frayed, and mutilated can also create some interesting shapes.

Straws appear to still be available for purchase, plastic not paper.
