"Célèbre dès sa présentation au public, en 1873, ce tableau a été peint par Alphonse de Neuville (1) (1835-1885).

Peintre originaire de Saint-Omer, entré brièvement à l'école des mousses de Lorient dans sa jeunesse et après quelques études de Droit, Alphonse de Neuville a été brièvement l'élève de François-Edouard Picot, peintre néo-classique, lui-même élève de Jacques-Louis David. Neuville se passionne dès le début de sa carrière pour les peintures aux thèmes militaires…."
