Anyone got any go to websites, I'm thinking historic and heritage site websites, that have some nice photos of late Victorian or very early 20thC land fortifications? Pretty much anything I've found so far is shore forts or WWI – WII. |

Look at the English Heritage page for Landguard Fort at Felixstowe. The Tilbury Fort page might also be of interest. |

Check out ACW era batteries:
And some military bases, which may be similar to coastal forts but not really close enough to shore to be useful against invaders from the sea: link Then there's the simpler defences of places like Rorkes Drift:
Apart from those, however, there may not have really been so many, so you'll just have to embrace the F in VSF and make stuff up. Some shore forts could be transplanted to a hill or ridge inland and do the same against land ships as they were expected against sea ships?

Thanks all, food for thought. Fort Nelson is really good, but its sufficiently large that translation, even of individual elements, to the gaming table would be tricky (I'm working to in 15mm). I'd like to try a Haxo Casemate though! Thinking I might go for a number of smaller elements link |

The British occupied Malta for several decades. Between 1870 and 1899 they built the Victoria Lines. Four principal forts, a number of other batteries and a continuous infantry wall to connect the forts together and stretches right across the island from the east coast to the west coast. Plenty of detail and photos on line. |

Thanks, Fort DeSoto was particularly interesting. I'm thinking of adding a couple of mortar positions to my list of possible components. Hadn't heard about Malta's Victoria Lines despite my parents in-law holidaying there. Some sections of wall are also on the list. |
