… in early doesn't impact weight loss

""We have wondered for a long time if when one eats during the day affects the way the body uses and stores energy," said study author Nisa M. Maruthur, M.D., M.H.S., associate professor of medicine, epidemiology and nursing at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. "Most prior studies have not controlled the number of calories, so it wasn't clear if people who ate earlier just ate fewer calories. In this study, the only thing we changed was the time of day of eating."

Maruthur and colleagues followed 41 overweight adults in a 12-week study. Most participants (90%) were Black women with prediabetes or diabetes, and average age of 59 years. Twenty-one of the adults followed a time-restricted eating pattern, limiting eating to specific hours of the day and ate 80% of their calories before 1 p.m. The remaining 20 participants ate at usual times during a 12-hour window, consuming half of their daily calories after 5 p.m. for the entire 12 weeks. All participants consumed the same pre-prepared, healthy meals provided for the study. Weight and blood pressure were measured at the beginning of the study; then at 4 weeks, 8 weeks and 12 weeks…"

Yes there has been a "diet" suggested the you only eat 12 hours out of the day. And fast for 12 hours, basically.

Of course I'm old school … you need to exercise to burn calories. Many jobs today are not that labor intensive.

Another "problem" I see in the USA, food and drink are everywhere and generally easily obtained by most of the population.

Ain't that the truth!!

I don't know about weight loss or other benefits from eating only at certain times of day, but I do know from reading and personal experience that if you give your digestive system a good 10 hour break between the last meal of the night and the first of the day, you will have better bowel movements and will be less hungry (and will therefore eat less) because you'll be metabolizing your food more completely.

I've heard/read that eating all your calories in 8 hours of the day tricks your body into fasting mode, supposedly, causing your to burn calories stored in your body the rest of the time.

Don't know if it works for sure, but probably wouldn't be terrible to try.

As a young adult, back when I was skinny (anecdotal evidence there), I rarely if ever ate breakfast, just lunch and dinner, so that works for the above.

Of course, I was starving by lunch time, and got dinner after work, but when sleeping, and then in the early morning, I didn't feel the need to eat. I need to be up for a while before I get hungry.

I've become certain of a few things.

#1 – Everyone is different. What works for other people or works in studies may or may not work for you. You have to learn yourself, and your body changes as you age so it's a never-ending process.

#2 – You can't exercise away calories. You'd have to jog 45 minutes for a typical Starbucks. There aren't enough hours in the day.

#3 – Calories-in-calories-out is gibberish. A lot of sugar leaves in our urine. Some people burn a lot of calories sitting around. Some people burn a lot of calories thinking.

#4 – Any eating limitation system is basically tricking you into eating a lot less.

#5 – You just have to be all-around healthy: vegetables, exercise, fiber, sleep, stress, water. There's nothing you can magically do in one area of your life that will let you be stupid in another area.

Just to be clear, calories in calories out is not gibberish. I've lost 30 pounds the last year doing calories in calories out.

There aren't any weight loss miracles out there. You have to have your head in the right place to find a sustainable plan that allows you to lose weight. It's a combination of calories and activity, not a big mystery.
