The drive definitely is towards skirmish games of 20 or 30 figures or small battle games of 100 or so figs and a couple of vehicles (e.g. Bolt Action) and to have demo games on 4 x 4 tables with a dozen nicely painted figs As I grew up in the hobby, I used to stare in amazement at the huge 28mm games at wargames shows and aspired to get collections and have games like that (I think I've cracked it grin), has that drive gone? Or are people just happy to start gaming with a few figures and then just stop.

I think a difference today might be that the small game is ok too. Back in the 80s when I started if we couldn't get at least 3 a side, with a corps each, for Empire, it was a cancellation. If that were the standard now, pre pandemic I'd get one or two games a year. One on one or two for three hours happily gets a game in.

Our group does both large and small games, as well as almost all "sizes" in between.

With the amount of painting etc being done during lockdown I think the big game will be back with a vengeance when covid is over.

Big games as I think it is defined is not a game I would aspire too. But each to their own, I guess its for painters not players. You could do the same game with less figures and that would be less painting.

UshCha: Sometimes it is the only way to play some scenarios (Leipzig). Often these are run with figures from multiple players (though some fools, like me, field the whole thng)

Many of us like the company and confusion that comes with having 8-12 players around the table(s). Big games can be the 'campaign in a day' type events too

I only love big games !! I think it is very "American" to just like BIG THINGS?
The GRAND canyon, the GREAT lakes, the PACIFIC fleet, etc.
My AWI AND FIW have over a 1000 figures each.
Shoot, I have over 500 cowboys.

*shrug* I disagree with the results. Taken across a real cross-section, I don't thing the large game is prevalent. On TMP, ok. In the rest of the world, not so sure.

It doesn't say it is prevalent. It discusses whether or not it is the same as it has been in the past.

Taken across a real cross-section,

Do you have empirical data? I would agree that, IME, big games are prevalent. But it takes the same data to assert either way.

Yes you can. If you want to chuck a bunch of the relevant characteristics of combat. Some people just don't want to simulate any realism in their games. I hear Canyland is nice …
