"La ciudad de Numancia protagonizó uno de los más valerosos actos de resistencia que se dieron en la conquista de la Península por las fuerzas romanas.

Una vez concluida la guerra contra los cartagineses los romanos decidieron quedarse en la península Ibérica. Tras las campañas de Sempronio Graco en el 180 a.C. y la firma de unos tratados con los pueblos indígenas, Hispania conocería un periodo de relativa calma. Pero esta calma no duraría siempre; en el año 153 a.C. los habitantes de Segeda, capital de los belos, cerca de Calatayud, debido al incremento de su población, decidieron ampliar las murallas. Este acto no fue bien visto por Roma que rompió los acuerdos, dando lugar a las denominadas guerras celtíberas, que darían más de un disgusto a la todopoderosa Roma…"
