… 1776 – 1783 "The Continentals had no doubt: Banastre Tarleton was the most barbaric and hated officer in America. Given his historical importance, surprisingly little has been written about the dashing cavalry leader. Oscar and Catherine Gilbert rectify this oversight with Bloody Ban: Banastre Tarleton and the American Revolution, 1776-1783, the first modern biography to appear in more than half a century. Tarleton enjoyed a meteoric rise in rank and stature. He began the war at age 22 in 1776 as a cornet (lieutenant), and by 1781, the 26-year-old was a lieutenant colonel and leader of the feared Loyalist British Legion ("Tarleton's Raiders"), a combined arms brigade recruited in the northern colonies and sent south to terrorize and subdue its rebellious citizenry. Lord Cornwallis considered him his right-hand man, and entrusted Tarleton with the most difficult of missions…"

"Is it true what they say about you authors being…. gifted?" I've read, The Green Dragoon by Robert Bass. I think there was room for improvement, hopefully this will be it. Besides the author is an 0800 man. |

Seriously… It's a good thing that books are held to higher standards than publisher's blurbs. "First modern biography in more than half a century…"? As Will and Roger pointed out, that's at least 3. I wonder how much blame he will get in this book for Cowpens. How the authors treat Waxhaws will also be interesting. According to the blurb, negatory on both. But the blurb is not the book. |

So, what you are saying, if this were a book about, say Howe, is that Affairs of state must take precedence over the affairs of State? I'd say Ban was just a small cog in the wheel of life… Eric |

Thank you for posting these. I have read all of these. May I suggest the following books? William Washington is not as well written about as our other two individuals previously mentioned. The first is by Stephen Haller. link And Also very well done and highly recommend link Lastly for general information for cavalry during the rev war period: link |

Thanks for the suggestions, but I have all three already. The War of the Revolution, especially the Continental Army, is my secondary military history interest. |

I have Steve Haller's book on William Washington and thought it was well researched and written. He's a good friend and fellow Jackson Gamer so I may be slightly prejudiced, but I still recommend his book. Jim |

"I have Steve Haller's book on William Washington and thought it was well researched and written. He's a good friend and fellow Jackson Gamer so I may be slightly prejudiced, but I still recommend his book." It is a most excellent book. Back in the 1970's I eagerly awaited each issue of the New England War gamers Association's newsletter, The Courier. The best part was the American Rev War articles by some guy named Steve Haller. His columns started me not only on a path of gaming the Rev War (which I still do today) but in a career with the National Park Service for thirty years. I have recently gotten in contact with him and yes he is a great guy. |
