Has anyone else watched this series?

Watched the first two episodes and lost interest. Maybe it was right after the big guy lugging the mortar around is told to "set fire for 50 meters" and blows up a tank.

RittervonBek02 Dec 2020 12:52 a.m. PST

I endured the whole thing. Nuff said,

45thdiv02 Dec 2020 4:35 a.m. PST

It wasn't that bad. I don't understand why they went with the colored in look, but I got use to it. As for the issues with the mortar guy and the tank, well if I can believe that the tanks in Patton were German, I can get past any small hiccups. For what it was, I am enjoyed it. 500 days of on the line combat. The 45th Division an excellent division and it deserves to have it's story told.

I lasted thru the opening credits and first 20 seconds. It's a cartoon.

Technically it is hybrid animation, but it sure looks like a cartoon

mjkerner02 Dec 2020 10:05 a.m. PST

Mostly dreck.

I liked it despite the naysayers. It has its flaws but overall was entertaining.

Watching it was like reading the old Sergeant Rock comics.

Haven't seen it, evidently won't, but a public telling of the history of the 45th is long overdue. The divisional museum here in OKC is amazing and a "must see" to any history buff spending a day or more here in OKC.

Not just because I'm a born Okie, but the contribution of this division to the overall victory is enormous. There are a number of good histories, but I unreservedly recommend "The Rock of Anzio" (available via this link

The endurance and achievements of the the 45th at Anzio in particular may actually amaze any readers not already aware of the details.

I'm sorry to read that the movie seems to have missed the mark--the vets deserve better.

I enjoyed it. 45th deserves the recognition and its a damn fine storyline.

Mark5202 Dec 2020 2:35 p.m. PST

Well, it was worthwhile to watch. It has its Hollywood crap just like pretty much anything made. It's nice to see my fellow 45th guys get some love though. If you don't watch don't complain when more stuff fails to get made. The animation held down costs and my understanding is half the content was cut to get it made.

Prince Alberts Revenge02 Dec 2020 3:18 p.m. PST

From what I understand, it was intended to be an 8 part conventionally filmed series. Budget cuts forced the creators to trim it down and use the animation aspects. Apparently they decided to try that Trioscope hybrid animation. Because it was limited to half the length a lot of the story they intended to tell was omitted.

I thought the animation was actually really interesting and it kept my attention. The storyline felt a bit too "Disney" in how they presented it. I didn't think it was terrible and after watching it, I learned more about Sparks and the story of his unit. I'd give it a solid 6 or 6.5 out of 10.

Wargamer Blue02 Dec 2020 3:22 p.m. PST

I enjoyed it.

Korvessa02 Dec 2020 4:25 p.m. PST

I binge watched it.
For it's intent, I thought it was pretty good.

Berzerker7302 Dec 2020 6:06 p.m. PST

I watched all of the episodes and thought it was well done. I now want to get the book it was on.

The book, "The Liberator" by Alex Kershaw is very good. It follows the career of Felix Sparks and his regiment from Sicily, to Italy, France, and into Germany. They went from one big hellacious fight to another, and just when you thing it can't get any worse for these poor guys; it does. The Battle of Aschaffenburg was particularly brutal. The Nazi officials in control of that city were much worse than what is depicted in the TV show. They rivaled the WWII Japanese in fanatical fighting to the death while knowing that they had lost the war. It's easy to see why some of them went berserk when they reached Dachau.

Weird WWII03 Dec 2020 4:42 a.m. PST

Liked the comic book look but the acting and overall story was pretty mediocre in execution.

Worth viewing once and then moving on,
