just using works full of myths like Elting or Houssaye won't do any longer Perhaps then you can explain, then, why Dawson quoted or referenced Col Elting four times in the newest Waterloo book, Waterloo Napoleon's Last Army, featuring the excellent paintings of Keith Rocco with Dawson writing the text, on pages 28, 52, 80, and 160? Seems to me that you continually denigrate Col Elting's work and now Houssaye's work because Col Elting writes on the Grande Armee and Houssaye's version of Waterloo is just not to your liking. Whether or not you 'like' a historians' work is one thing and completely understandable. Continually denigrating comprehensive works such as Swords is not. |

Great, but do you know the men who were put in the new regiments and where they came from or how long they served? Understanding the new organization is one thing, but having a glimpse into the actual officers and soldiers of these these regiments is very different and sheds some light on the issues they haf. I showed the issues the 7e Legere had with different officers. Paul has willing shown his materials with us and asked for nothing in return. If I didn't have a meltdown of my computer and lose all my research I would post on more regiments organization from 1814-1815. I have no problem with Colonel Elting as it is one of my first books, but is there new material that can further his research? Yes there is and it should be viewed and used. However, I am not a historian and feel lucky to have previous historians who laid down the foundation for us. |

why does all this remind me of the crusade against Dave Hollins? |

Col Elting was planning a Swords II when he died. |

@ von Winterfeldt +1. No longer having David Hollins & Steve Smith and postings by knowledgeable others on TMP is an extremely great loss to all of us who are interested in the Napoleonic/Revolutionary Wars.. Ian |

This thread is all about Paul Dawson's Uniform research. Many of you may well hold the works as 'the new bible' in the future, overtaking the likes of for example: Rouselott, Knotel and researcher/historian Bouquoy. But my advice (if you need any from me) is to not throw the baby out with the bathwater and never stop looking for more evidence no matter how big your library is and the sources it contains. And just to make things clear. Paul Dawson should be praised for the research he has done and the findings he has produced. But (like all Uniformologists past and present) Laurels should not lay at the foot of his tomes but maybe, at the foot of some of his findings. |

it won't be the bible but it will add up useful information to be taken into account, I love my contemporary prints but I won't snub new research only because it may contradict some illustrations or that I have to revise my opinion and to change it due to new evidence. |

Agree that any information, if accurate, is useful. The source always should be considered. |

Does anyone else have or has seen the 2021 book Waterloo: Napoleon's Last Army by Keith Rocco and text by Paul Dawson? |

What was 'the crusade against Dave Hollins'? I thought his books were all pretty solid. In the opinions he expressed here about the Austrian army, I felt he had perhaps stumbled a bit into the monographer's bear trap of becoming unjustifiably defensive of the subject army. I never noticed this in the books nor thought he had written anything unreliable or partial in them as a result. |
