"I recently picked up a lot of gladiators and other figures. They were sold as Wargames Foundry in loose bags. Turns out, they may be recasts. The price was a little too good, and the quality is a little off. But, I have not often purchased Foundry miniatures new so the quality issues may be consistent across many of the figures. There are doubts.

"More on recasts at the end."

Nicely done!

Yes, Foundry did have a lot of 'little person' Gladiators. They were a thing, but probably not to the extent that they are represented.

Is that really the collective noun…

A Cibum of gladiators….

Fights matching little people against little people or women against women were sort of novelty acts.

You say some might not be Foundry. They all look like Foundry Gladiators to me. The Foundry range was done by multiple sculptors, and at one point each sculptor did his own pack. Some later ones were conversions that I am pretty sure were done by Kevin Dalimore, though I could be mistaken.

As to mould lines; figures have mould lines, some more noticeable than others. A mould line doesn't necessarily indicate a recast. It might just as easily indicate a miscast or an old mould that needs renewing.

Pretty sure all of the gladiators are Foundry, but there were some other figures I got in the purchase that were advertised as Foundry and were not. There were some Copplestone and others thrown in.

For the recast concern, I may be off base. But the quality is odd and the metal seems different. Could be different runs.

Mark Copplestone did at least one pack of Foundry Gladiators.

Cheap recasts have more than one mould line, the line from the original model if not cleaned up and the line from the new cast.
Casting can be rough from legitimate sources, a good example was GW's finecast which was a type of resin and shipped with so many air bubbles it got dubbed failcast. They even put out a liquid greenstuff product to try and solve the issue.

You really need to compare the figures with others of the same pose that you know are Foundry ones.
