Below is an article about some of the great castles and fortresses ever built link I have been fortunate to have had the chance to see and walk in the shadow of many castles But as a Boy the ones that inspired me were The Valley of the Assassins – Alamut Castle – one of several whose ruins are in the Alborz mountains of Iran
Reading and seeing the remains of the Castle – and the Siege of Kars – first got me interested in sieges link In Cyprus following the Crusaders at St Hilarion Castle
Bourtange in Groningen, the Netherlands
and Lastly the Crusader Castle in Acre, Israel
Which ones would you add to the list? |

I have always enjoyed visiting Corfe Castle. The ruins always seemed so full of potential for a skirmish wargame, over multiple levels with loads of paths winding amongst the rubble.

Caernarfon – still intact (mostly), great views from the towers, and a pub across the road next to the sea that does excellent food! Tower of London – OK, it's a bit too touristy, but it's the Tower innit! Ravens, beefeaters, Crown Jewels, etc etc… Dover – Iconic 'gateway to England'. Two thousand years of history here, from the Roman lighthouse to the WW2 tunnels. It's bleedin' MASSIVE, Carisbrooke – I grew up close to here. Nice Norman motte and bailey with later additions AND a donkey operated well! And who doesn't love donkeys… |

Château Gaillard in France. Built by Richard I and just amazing. The French had to climb up the latrine chute to take it. |

So many !! My favourite castles tend to be small ones where living would not be out of the bounds of possibility. Dolbadard, Dolwyddelan, Lindisfarne. Then there are big ones like Dover, Caerphilly. And mountainous ones like St. Hilarion. |
