Nice model. IMO it needs more dust…

Nice paint job but as stated it does need more dust. Currently looks to factory fresh.

Funny thing. My very first impression was how I loved the dust. The colour looks just right (stress judging purely by pics in Time Life or any 60s magazine) but it does need far more for "weathering".

The kit stowage is great and the crew is really well modelled and painted. But I would get my biggest dry brush out now and run it all over! It would highlight every detail of the upper surface of the tank, lightly done (and heavy with it lower half).

First time I have seen this painted. Must be a helluva size in 1/56!

thumbs up

it needs more dust…
It may be monsoon season and it just dried off after a heavy rain … plus it looks to me the OD is a bit faded too …

The OD is faded?

Now I am curious.

I am to be honest only interested in OD applied to Free French vehicles in Paris August 44 (2eme DB in 20mm shown elsewhere). But my impression is this is nothing like the fading seen in NW Europe only six weeks or so after landing on Utah beach.

Actually……OK….I admit my Vallejo OD painted Shermans are darker but massively highlighted with various earth colours and dry brushing. So the end result is….

Naw I need to think on't as we say oop north

WWII OD was different than the OD/Green of the '60s … link

It's great looking piece.

Shouldn't the interior of the hatches be ivory color and rubber on the road wheels be blacker?

Tank interiors in ivory, sure but hatches' interiors in the surface colour. Think how often they are left wide open and exposed. Certainly the absolute rule in WWII USA anyway. (as much as anything is ever absolute)

Rubber tyres and pads on tracks if applicable I paint ina gre-black combination and then dry brush the Dickens out of that for mud/sand/dust/fading. I notice the chunks out of the tyres, which I think is a nice authentic touch.

No, the interior of hatches are OD … White would make the tank more visible as the hatches are opened frequently.

Road wheels and track pads start out black, but would quickly become a fade dark gray. Plus add the color of the sand, dust, mud, etc. And yes, some times there would be chucks and cracks out of the rubber after operating for a while …

So yes deadhead is basically correct …

Waddya mean "basically?" Schmasically?

If I post enough opinions I have to be right occasionally. In an infinite universe the most unlikely things can happen….and how often?

Wolfhag25 Nov 2020 2:02 p.m. PST

I guess the M-48's I was around in the states didn't bother painting the interior of the hatches. Ideally, I'd paint them as you did.

That's a very unusual cupola? Is it a refit?

Good job.

Probably stateside that had been the case before they deployed, etc. By the time I was on active duty, all hatch interiors were painted OD or a similar tactical color.

That is one of modified TC cupolas as well as with an M2 .50 added mounted on the top … the M48A3 …

We had the A3 but not that cupola. I think they added a .50cal on top because the cupola .50cal was pretty worthless because it was mounted sideways and had feed problems.

The different cupola was a refit to the M48 series, when it was found that the original style cupola did not give sufficient visibility when buttoned up. Later, these cupolas would be traded in for an Israeli style cupola ("Urdan") in the -A5 version.

Yes, you can see that in the links I posted. There were a number of upgrades to the M48. Making it a better MBT, etc.

Wolfhag26 Nov 2020 1:09 p.m. PST

The Marines were too cheap to purchase the upgrades.
