pronounce "Xhoris"?
Walloons and English-speakers might say "Horsis"
In French, I might try "Oar-reece", almost as is with a Cockney accent, rhyming with Maurice

He was 1.68 m tall – 5' 6" – same as Napoleon, average for the era in France.

He had a older brother, Jean-Guillaume, born in 1781. I can not find any record of service for him. An eldest son of a widow would not have been conscripted in the An 10.

And I think this is his father, Richard, born 1747 in Baclain, Cherain parish.

The family appears to have been farriers.

Jean-Pierre served actively after being wounded. I think equally debilitating was being a prisoner of the Russians. But there is no notice, as would be typical, of him being given a medical discharge. So, another possibility is that his family purchased a replacement.

It looks like they were giving the conscripts 3 full (revoluyionary) months' training in the depot battalion, even as the army was taking the field for the campaign in 1805.

Thanks for the update.
And interesting observations.
And yes, with N. micro-managing everything as he did it's a wonder anything got done at all.
