In the seemingly endless search for "the" AWI rules, I was looking at these, and had the following questions for those who have played them:

1. My figs are 25/28mm, while the rules mention 15mm. If you play 25/28mm, do you change anything? Given the random movement based on dice rolls, this could be a pain to do so, and the ranges for other stuff, e.g. shooting or combat, seem fine to use with 25/28mm figs.

2. My aforementioned 25/28mm infantry figs are based 2/stand for infantry, and I will NOT be rebasing. I do have some singly-mounted figs for FIW (primarily play M&T) that I can use for skirmishers. Since my stands are based 2/, should I treat the references to 3 figures of skirmishers as 2 figures (in particular, I wonder if this will make skirmishers too powerful if they shoot 1 die per 2 figs), or keep it as is? If I keep it as is, is a "casualty" on skirmishers still 3 figures lost, and how would it be reconciled for numbers in combat?

3. In the Combat section it references "+1 or 2: General with unit (depends on how many CP's he spent on 'inspiring troops')", but there is no where else a +2 is otherwise referred to. What's up with that? Since all brigadiers get 3 CPs, is that +2 a bonus for an exceptional leader?

Thanks,
Dave

My adaptations are here: link

I'm currently working through changes for my (latest) AWI project which is mostly small or old school 25s. There is other stuff on my blog here if interested: battle77.blogspot.com

They are my ‘go to' set of rules, so to quickly answer:

1. You don't have to because it depends how big your units are, but as mine are 30 figures I will increase the scale to make it look nicer.
2. Never rebase anything. Just interpret bases as ‘strength points'. So an 8-base unit has 8 strength points. -1 strength point per casualty.
3. +1 per CP spent, so if your general has 3CPs he can use up to two inspiring the chaps and the other doing something else. Scratching or whatever. Personally, I don't use that system because it was difficult to track. My alternative is in the link above.

Hope this helps! 💂‍♂️

Have you tried the board game for the AWI Hold the Line ?

Jeffers,

Thanks for the response. I had in fact found your adaptations site. I was just thinking the first game I tried should be as close to RAW as possible, excepting those items I needed to address for my figure basing. Ideally, I want to use a formation of two ranks of stands to be a line, and one rank to represent skirmishers. So either way I would be throwing a die/stand of 2 figs. I guess I'll just have to try it and see if it keeps things balanced.

As far as the CPs for inspiring troops being +1/CP spent, I don't believe your interpretation matches the RAW (I am referencing the WI1-WEBLooseFiles.pdf file from Wargames Illustrated here). In the Designer's Notes section, it gives the following example: "Thus a four-point general could, say, move two dice x inches and then rally one DP, or he could issue two orders. But he couldn't move two dice x inches and add one in combat since this would cost a total of five CP's." So it seems pretty clear it's +1 per 3 CPs spent. I suppose a CinC who is already attached to a unit could roll an AvgD6+1 and get 6 CPs, so he could spend them all to get a +2 inspiring troops.

Thanks again,
Dave

parrskool,

I have not. I looked it up on Boardgame Geek, and it looks similar to Command & Colors. Regardless, I am much more a miniatures gamer than a board gamer. Or did you mean the game can be converted to miniatures?

Yes, you are right – shows how bad my memory is! I went old school and checked my original copy and it's 3CPs to inspire, so I assume +2 is the maximum that can be added but you need a leader with 6CPs to do it. No wonder I changed it.

I started off using Stone Mountain figures 3 to a base in two ranks for a line. I think my bases were 1" wide, so unit frontage was 4 or 5" at full strength. Again, I just went with what looked right.
