Although I have had a life long interest in war-gaming it has been twenty years since I actually played a game. Recently I bough three boxes of Victrix Iberians (1 Armoured 2 unarmoured) and am awaiting some horse to arrive. So maybe this is the time to get a game or two in once things return to normal.

The thing is I have never played ancients and was wondering if you kind folk would direct me to a decent set of rules. I like decent sized unit games absolutely no skirmishing with armies?? of twenty figures aside malarkey.

The other thing is these are great figures which I painted in all of two weeks but the stands are big. And whilst I like that, at 16mm to 20mm big I just wonder what sort of basing dimensions I would be looking at and if I need to prune the bases. I appreciate that basing is approaching universal but I like to base to the rules.

Any directions or food for thought would be greatly appreciated.

My favorite ancient rules set is To the Strongest. You can use however many figures you like. They can be bought and downloaded immediately from Big Red Bat Shop. In addition. Army lists are free and include Iberians, Republican Romans, Gauls, and Carthaginians. All classic opponents. Cheers!

The Iberians are so easy to paint: white with different colored trim. Shields are easy to. It has always, since 1977, been one of my favorite armies.

Second vote for TTS here. The notion of playing on a grid is odd until you try it. Well worth the effort.

Third vote for TTS, our local group loves it.

Get the L'Art de La Guerre Ancients and Medieval rules pdf for $5 USD dollars and the Basic Impetus 2 rules PDF for $5 USD dollars. This will give you so much fun. All the necessary army lists are included in the rules.

Best $10 USD dollars in the hobby.

I would consider Triumph! It's available on Wargames Vault as a PDF or as a print edition at Scale Creep. Army lists are online and free. Fast play, clearly written rules, easy to learn.

Iberian shields aren't necessarily easy to paint. They have a lot of geometric shapes. Here are some HaT 1/32 scale figures that I painted.
