Y'mean there are magazines that cover this sh*t?!?

Oberlindes Sol LIC Supporting Member of TMP09 Nov 2020 7:59 p.m. PST

None. I have a few issues of different things from the 1970s and 1980s.

Personal logo ColCampbell Supporting Member of TMP09 Nov 2020 8:09 p.m. PST

"Wargames, Soldiers, & Strategy" is my main one but I also get "Medieval Warfare" -- both from Karwansaray Publishers karwansaraypublishers.com

But I also try to keep up with the "ACW Gamer" and "Warning Order ezines.

I also have an almost complete collection of "The Courier" magazine, just missing a few of the very earliest mimeographed issues.

I'm probably a bit of a dinosaur in todays world but there's nothing I like more than to settle down with a nice drink and a wargaming mag. To that end I regularly get the big three, White Dwarf and a slew of modeling mags.

genew49209 Nov 2020 9:25 p.m. PST

Wargames, Soldiers & Strategy and Ancient Warfare. See ColCampbell above for link.

Thresher0109 Nov 2020 10:53 p.m. PST

I used to do WI and MW (Wargames Illustrated and Miniature Wargames), but years/decades ago content seemed to drop off, and I figured I could by more minis if I bought fewer mags, so……

Chimpy10 Nov 2020 12:24 a.m. PST

I subscribe to Wargames Soldiers and Strategy, and Wargames Illustrated.

I find that I enjoy them for a light read. (or just looking at the eye candy)

ZULUPAUL Supporting Member of TMP10 Nov 2020 3:10 a.m. PST

Wargames Soldiers & Strategy is the only one.

parrskool10 Nov 2020 4:05 a.m. PST

In the '70's & 80's I used to get them all, but now find them a bit repeatative and not having enough content of interest to me to justify the expense.

Yesthatphil10 Nov 2020 4:16 a.m. PST

Paper? Slingshot and The Nugget
Online? This one wink TMP
Otherwise my wargame/military history comes via blogs and Facebook pages.

Subscribe to WSS. I check out WI and MW on the OMM web site and buy according to projected contents, though lately MW taping things to the cover has been discouraging. (It will come back.)

None now but even when I had subscriptions they were more of a habit than a useful resource. I rarely found a mag that had half that was interesting to me.

Slingshot was always the best but my interest in the period faded not long after I stopped doing the layout for it.

Russ Lockwood10 Nov 2020 8:44 a.m. PST

Against the Odds and S&T magazines for wargames in every issue. Various issues of WI, MW, WSS as needed. Little Wars TV for online video magazine. A variety of blogs and vblogs, including TMP. Also HMGS.org and especially its excellent book review section:

HMGS Historical Book Reviews

Warning Order

wfhgs.com/wrngorder.html

for an outstanding online magazine covering mini and hex boardgames. And, although this is a self-serving pat, my own Wargaming AAR sent to a private e-mail list -- although its coverage during the last 6 months is far, far less face-to-face than previous years.

Patrick Sexton Supporting Member of TMP10 Nov 2020 9:16 a.m. PST

Wargames Illustrated and Miniature Wargames, from Games Plus; the local ( and outstanding) hobby shop.

Green Tiger10 Nov 2020 9:39 a.m. PST

I used to subscribe to Wargames Illustrated but stopped many years ago – I don't really buy any of them any more – I don't feel like they reflect 'my'hobby.

IronDuke596 Supporting Member of TMP10 Nov 2020 9:49 a.m. PST

"Wargames, Soldiers, & Strategy"

Martian Root Canal10 Nov 2020 10:58 a.m. PST

None. Quicker to use the internet to find new products, games and content of interest. I used to pick up MW and WI on a regular basis, but the quality of content has dropped off in favor of more product advertising.

Dagwood10 Nov 2020 10:58 a.m. PST

Regularly, as in every month, none. Less regularly, Ancient Warfare, Medieval Warfare, and Ancient History. Occasional WI and WSS.

Magazines these days tend to have "themed" issues. If I'm not interested in the theme, it's pointless buying them.

kodiakblair10 Nov 2020 12:14 p.m. PST

None, haven't bothered with magazines for over 30 years.

jdpintex10 Nov 2020 1:21 p.m. PST

Don't subscribe to any, but pick them up whenever they are available at Barnes & Noble. Well, if they at least have an article that interests me.

They are good for new product comparisons and/or a listing of mfgs/ranges for a period.

gisbygeo10 Nov 2020 6:14 p.m. PST

I'm another vote for 'None.'

They seem to have become ads for the latest popular systems (although that could just reflect the popularity of those rules)

Of course I used to them for the ads, but the internet is free and more efficient, and TBH I'm less interested in new periods than I was when I was younger.

I am waiting for the Courier to come back

SultanSevy10 Nov 2020 7:47 p.m. PST

Wargames Illustrated and Wargames Soldiers & Strategy on an issue by issue basis. Some issues have a lot of good stuff, but some cover periods/topics that I have little interest in.

I do subscribe to Lone Warrior, and download Warning Order pretty often.

Chuckaroobob11 Nov 2020 4:59 a.m. PST

Ws&s, mw and I used to get wi.

Prince Alberts Revenge11 Nov 2020 7:06 a.m. PST

I also subscribe to Wargames Soldiers and Strategy, and Wargames Illustrated. I am not a fan of digital editions, love the feel of flipping through actual pages while in bed or (in the summer) poolside.

arthur181511 Nov 2020 9:23 a.m. PST

I get electronic copies of WS&S and Lone Warrior; paper copies of MW – though that may change/cease at next renewal…

Jeffers12 Nov 2020 9:43 a.m. PST

None. To quote Bucks Fizz, now those days are gone.

Personal logo 20thmaine Supporting Member of TMP12 Nov 2020 1:14 p.m. PST

Lone Warrior. A great read, and still actually useful to my gaming. It's the journal of the Solo Wargamers Association.

Sometimes pick up MW, WSS and WI. Maybe 2 or 3 out of the combined 36 issues in a year.

Tabletop Gaming has also fallen to being an occasional purchase.

I think I bought a White Dwarf last year. It might have been the year before.

martin goddard Sponsoring Member of TMP14 Nov 2020 11:49 a.m. PST

The MILL.
Although aimed at 15mm wargaming, there is much in there for all tastes too.

Seriously, I used to pick up the regular dispatches from Empires, Eagles, and Lions, waaay before it became a glossy. I think they used to print it up on the backs of their fast food wrappers before they switched to recycled newspapers.

Blackhorse MP20 Nov 2020 5:56 p.m. PST

Last mag I was into was Wargamer's Digest, but if I recall that was a little bit ago…
