I was looking for uniform reference material for the Wargames Foundry Crimean Cossacks. Most plates show them with long coats. The Foundry Cossacks are modeled without them. Viskovatov says blue forage cap with red band and piping and obviously blue pants with red stripe. Anyone have any information on the jackets? In the Foundry photos they look dark green but that seems a bit odd to me. |

I am pretty sure they were blue When in doubt, I like to find an original source – here is a plate from the New York Public library digital uniform collection link |

That's a great plate. I've hadn't seen that one before in my googling. Thank you. Its also a completely different uniform for the Don Cossacks. They seem to be a very complex group uniform-wise! |

MGS, I have been researching and slowly building my armies to re-fight Balaclava (very slowly) and I have a dedicated blog on the subject. I have just recently finished painting my Don Cossacks for the battle and will be starting my Ural Cossacks some time before the end of the year (I hope). I developed a uniform guide. If it's of use to you, please follow the link: balaclavabuild.blogspot.com |

Nice Blog and lots of useful information. I'm coming to the conclusion that the Foundry figures depict Cossacks in the short jacket, I think Viskovatov calls a kurtka, replaced in 1845 by the chekmen shown in Frederick plate. I wanted to get on with some Cossacks, but I think I'll wait for Great War to be available again. They look much nicer painted on your blog than they do on the North Star web site. Now I'll just have to go back to Viskovatov and figure out what he says about foot Cossacks. |
