"20 years after Joaquin Phoenix appeared as the Roman emperor Commodus in Ridley Scott's Gladiator, it's been announced that he will once again pair with the director to portray another famous emperor: this time, Napoleon Bonaparte.

The upcoming biopic, Kitbag – a title that references the saying that "there is a general's staff hidden in every soldier's kitbag", according to Deadline – will reportedly focus on the personal life of the French military leader. More specifically, the film will explore Napoleon's swift and ruthless rise to power, and the unstable relationship he had with his wife, Josephine…"

Every time I read "Kitbag" and "General's staff" in relation to this film project I shake my head. Really?

SHaT198403 Nov 2020 4:48 p.m. PST

Snore…..
and yes Brian I agree- unless its a cover name… ugghh!

'Unstable'? They were 'shaggin' like crazy folks ;-)

Is Idris Eiba not available?

Cavcmdr03 Nov 2020 6:38 p.m. PST

Pack up yer troubles in yer old knapsack and cry, cry, cry …

Zephyr103 Nov 2020 9:33 p.m. PST

I always thought David L. Lander would have made a great Napoleon. The resemblance is almost uncanny… ;-)

YankeeDoodle04 Nov 2020 3:36 a.m. PST

As most people under 40 wouldn't recognize the word "knapsack" and, at best, would associate "baton" with a type of bread, it would have been rather poor marketing….?

Brechtel19804 Nov 2020 5:44 a.m. PST

But those 'under 40' would certainly 'recognize' the term 'backpack' as most children through high school, at least in the US definitely use them for school…

'Kitbag' just doesn't cut it and it's a terrible title for a Napoleonic movie.

And those high schoolers in marching band would certainly understand what a 'baton' is…

And Jouquin Phoenix is a lousy choice…

YankeeDoodle04 Nov 2020 6:44 a.m. PST

"..high schoolers in marching band.."
Undoubtedly the target audience for a biopic of Bonaparte?

YankeeDoodle04 Nov 2020 6:50 a.m. PST

But the vision of the 26 marching and twirling with their pom-poms and ra ra skirts has a certain novelty?

My son was in marching band and he would watch it.

Apparently, you have no idea what you are referring to.

The band drum majors did have batons, either symbolic or actual and the band members certainly knew what those were.

What is a 'ra ra skirt'? And the flag bearers/color guard carried flags, not pom-poms. I guess you don't know the difference between them and cheer leaders…

YankeeDoodle04 Nov 2020 8:20 a.m. PST

Thank you for the correction. I hadn't realised the celebrated quote effectively translated as "All French soldiers have the chance to be Drum Majors". Their knapsacks must have been somewhat bigger than I realised too?

Brechtel19804 Nov 2020 8:27 a.m. PST

Your sarcasm in usual disdain for anyone who disagrees with you is once again evident.

Well done.

YankeeDoodle04 Nov 2020 8:59 a.m. PST

"…anyone who disagrees with you..". I posted first so, technically, you disagreed with me?
I know you're a stickler for accuracy.

Danny Devito is too old now I guess.

No women were considered for the role?

Ridley Scott ruined history in the Kingdom of Jerusalem and
Gladiator so now it is his turn to ruin a more recent historical situation.

Hopefully when Napoleon marches into Russia and fights the Russians at Borodino, the Russians will chant "ZULU !" like the Celts did in Gladiator.

It would only be the right thing to do.

Zephyr105 Nov 2020 10:19 p.m. PST

Alas, the Time Bandits will not be reprising their roles as Napoleon's generals in this movie…

Erzherzog Johann05 Nov 2020 11:36 p.m. PST

"like the Celts did in Gladiator"? Help!

Gazzola06 Nov 2020 6:20 a.m. PST

Nice to see everyone looking forward to a film that just happens to have a Napoleonic theme for a change, without zombies or rampaging robots. How appreciative we all are! LOL

As I said in the duplicate thread, we were all thrilled in 2012 when we heard Ridley Scott was making his first Alien movie since the 1970s. But then we watched Prometheus.

He's now at work on his first Napoleonic movie since the 1970s. Oh dear.

Meanwhile, wait until 'THe Last Duel' hits our screens.
