Hi all, I've begun a professional gig as a contributor to a blog for SJR Research, a historical research firm that's seeking to expand into research support for game designers. They've asked me to contribute content and I have written at least 12 articles of interest to the historical gamer, including a four part article on the defense of Bataan. Please give it a look and spread the word if you're interested! sjrresearch.tumblr.com |

Interesting mix, although in the spirit of the season, I read through the article on when survivalist horror PC gaming started, looking through the screen shots… Got me to thinking about the first survival or escape horror game for PCs… Thoughts went to Doom and Castle Wolfenstein for the PC for graphics, and some of the InfoCom games for text, but the first one I recall was Asylum for the IBM PC in 1982? 1983? Used ASCII characters to 'draw' a room and hallways, etc, where you are locked in an insane asylum and try to get out using typed text commands. Dimly, I recall Adventure that was played on a DEC minicomputer. Text only. Start at a mailbox. First thing I did was get eaten by a Groo… Never did get very far, but it's only tangentially linked to survivalist gaming, but it did have a Groo, so I'm counting it… |
