Hi All

Has anyone hereabouts bought PM's ‘SB38 19th Hussars charging with improvised lances'?

I am wondering what these models look like, since there isn't a photo on the twin's web site.

Cheers

Great! Thank you.

Are the poses of the three figures in the pack similar?

These are a couple from the set painted to serve as the 21st Lancers in the 2nd Afghan War.

Bob, very nice! looks like you bought them for the same purpose I did, to use as the 9th "Queen's Royal" Lancers in the Second Afghan War! Mine are to replace the old Wargames Foundry Zulu War 17th Lancers I've used that way for the past decade. The plan is to paint them same way you did, in the "transitional" uniform of mixed khaki and home service dress.

@Jack Jones: Yes, the pack of 6 troopers with lance are all In basically the same "charging" pose.

Mad Guru- In my post I said 21st Lancers but I really meant the 9th Lancers. I would replace the soft metal lances with more rigid wire lances if I were to do them again.

Thanks again.

I am considering modelling 5th Royal Irish Lancers.

The matter of the lance is a tricky one, in respect of stiffness. It's likely that the 5th arrived in theatre with bamboo lances (I do not think they improvised as hussars did), so I am wondering if nodes could be added to wire lances with a combination of filing and putty.

🤔

Here are a couple of interesting references:

@Jack Jones:

Back in 2012 a friend of mine also used these figs. as the 5th Royal Lancers. I've done a great deal of 28mm figure conversions, including some full unit weapons conversions, but I think I'd replace the lances rather than converting them. But if you give it a go please post the results here. For his 5th Royal Irish my friend replaced the "improved" lances with bamboo ones from Wargames Foundry, though you might possibly be able to order some from the Perrys, who now make their own bamboo lances for their Bengal Lancers.

Here's a link to the Foundry catalogue page with "Long Bamboo Spears" -- which are rather pricey at 10GBP for x12:

Thanks Mad Guru

I stumbled on the blog post at the weekend (I follow Michael's blog, but hadn't seen this post).

I know of the Foundry bamboo lances, and have them listed as a possibility. In reality, and at scale, the nodes are not as pronounced, which is why I wondered if it might be possible to shape them on a wire spear, somehow.

The stiffness would be an advantage (Ah-hem!) … so I will give this a go in due course – probably in the new year. I shall keep you posted I have bookmarked this thread).

Just now I am working on Naval Brigade units, and about to have a crack at modelling a Gatling gun limber.

Cheers
