What I mean is, would they be classified as light infantry, skirmishers, etc.

Rogers Rangers would typically be Skirmishers.
French Marines (which weren't actually marines) would usually be Light Infantry, but conceivably could be fielded as Line Infantry but maybe either Timid or Poor Shooters.

Yeah you can mess around with traits for cost adjustments as Major B says. The ranger unit example in the book is: Small unit(6 man), aggressive, veteran, light infantry for 8 points. The Compagnies Franches de la Marine are 12 man light infantry for 6 points.

Oh and if you want to use skirmish units the base 6 man unit is 2 pts.
