I went to my Book retail. at lunchtime and found this:

Good news for Scottish history addicts, Osprey will bring a fortress essay on the Scottish Tower Houses due in march 2006. Also a campain for the battle of Otterburn has been planned for februari.

Other stuff I picked up: Napoleon's Mameluk (warrior or elite) en The Mexican Revolution 1910-1920 (elite)also due in februari – march 06.

And an Elite on the Condor Legion, a Warrior on the Hitler Youth and an Angus McBride illustrated MAA on Ivan the Terrible…

Atomic Floozy23 Sep 2005 7:06 a.m. PST

Will the Mexican Revolution book feature a Mariachi band?

SauveQuiPeut23 Sep 2005 8:39 a.m. PST

I notice that 'Austrian Frontier Troops 1740-98' is finally out. Plus there is a whole bunch of OOP Napoleonic titles being reprinted – including MAA90 Saxony, at last..among others.

Please, where are you getting this information, exactly?

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx23 Sep 2005 10:50 a.m. PST

You can get it directly from ospreypublishing.com where you can also subscribe to a regular e-newsletter.

Otterburn, Flodden … is there some sudden US demand????

If you look on the sections for 18th, Nap and 19th (not ACW), you will find there is precisely nothing under "future releases".

SauveQuiPeut23 Sep 2005 1:39 p.m. PST

Possibly if the re-release of the OOP titles goes well we might see some new titles.

If not…

GUNBOAT23 Sep 2005 2:02 p.m. PST

take a look at WWW.play.com lot of Osprey books in there lists 3 days turn round very good and with not postage

Glengarry24 Sep 2005 10:40 a.m. PST

I visit the osprey web site regularly and subscribe to the newsletter, but nowhere can I find mention of Scottish Tower Houses, Otterburn, Napoleon's Mameluk's or The Mexican Revolution 1910-1920!

Kevin F Kiley24 Sep 2005 11:05 a.m. PST

Napoleon's Mamelukes is already listed on Amazon. I ordered it already, though it isn't published yet.

There's also one on the Imperial Guard Eclaireurs coming out next year.

If you haven't bought the Toulon volume, I'd recommend it. It's very good and quite well done.

Sincerely,
Kevin

earlofetterbeek25 Sep 2005 11:56 p.m. PST

I saw this information on the pre-print of the new catalogue for 2006 only including the first 3 months.

It was defenitely an osprey document. This information will be available on their website within 1 or 2 months.

Oops, I forgot there was something about the anglo-irish war of 1916 – …. (essential histories).

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx04 Oct 2005 2:36 a.m. PST

As Toulon has come out, it was interesting to come across The Fall of Toulon: The Royal Navy and the Royalist Last Stand Against the French Revolution by Bernard Ireland, (May 05) a 320pp hardback on the same subject from the publishers of Rothenberg.

I fail to see how anyone can say that there 'is precisely nothing' under future releases on the Osprey website.
"Napoleon's Mamelukes" and "Assaye" have been there for weeks.

Kevin F Kiley29 Dec 2005 1:13 p.m. PST

I emailed Osprey when the subject of their not going to publish anymore Napoleonic titles came up a few months ago.

I received a reply and the person said that it wasn't true and that they were going to publish more in 2006, specifically citing the two books on the Mamelukes and Scouts.

SauveQuiPeut02 Jan 2006 1:03 p.m. PST

There is, though, a difference between publishing already commissioned work and commissioning new work.

The claim was that Osprey was not going to be commissioning new Napoleonic work except the occasional 'topical' release – presumably this means cashing in on anniversaries like this years numerous Trafalgar releases.

It was never claimed by anyone that already commissioned work, such as the Mamelukes and Eclaireurs, would be cancelled.

SauveQuiPeut02 Jan 2006 1:17 p.m. PST

On the same subject it's worth pointing out that in the past Eylau 1807 and Borodino 1812 have won monthly polls on Osprey, while Friedland 1807 also scored highly.

None have a release date, not even the 1807 battles which one would expect Osprey to be planning for a bicentennial release.

Kevin F Kiley02 Jan 2006 4:28 p.m. PST

'It was never claimed by anyone that already commissioned work, such as the Mamelukes and Eclaireurs, would be cancelled.'

I am merely passing on information that was given to me by Osprey.

John Cook04 Feb 2006 11:09 a.m. PST

SQP,

As I remember what Osprey said in their Newsletter approximately 12 months ago was that they did not intend to COMMISSION any new Napoleonic titles for the time being. They did not say that they were never, ever, going to COMMISSION any at some time in the future or that they did not intend to PUBLISH those such as the Mamelukes and Assaye that had already been commissioned. These two are the only Napoleonic titles, if you count Assaye as such, of the 48 titles that are due over the next four months of 2006.

I suppose one has to ask the right question in the first place and, as you point out, there is a considerable difference between publishing already commissioned work and commissioning new work. This observation has been made before.

I too asked about commissioning new Napoleonic titles, particularly in the context of Wurttemberg which rumour had it was being written by Alfred Umhey. Osprey didn't reply to my initial or subsequent enquiry.

So, Gandalf was very lucky to have received a response at all, even if he did, it seems, ask the wrong question.

I supppose we shall have to wait and see what is on offer later in the year.

JC

SauveQuiPeut04 Feb 2006 4:35 p.m. PST

It's notable that in the 'Tell us what you want to see bit' Osprey has not offered a Napoleonic title since May 2005 (Russian Commanders). Along with Napoleons Swiss Regiments it was one of only two offered to the vote all last year.

By contrast 2004 saw four Napoleonic titles offered. 2003 also had four.

Osprey isn't bound to take any notice of the votes, but it does provide an interesting glimpse into how they are thinking.

Personally, I'm waiting to see if Eylau/Friedland shows up. Surely there must be more takers for that than 'Irish Kern 1400-1500'!

Ticker08 Feb 2006 2:34 p.m. PST

To add my ha'penny's worth I am also disappointed that Osprey appear to have missed the bicenntenial aspect of Jena and the Polish winter campaign of 1806 – 1807. However, I suppose that the challenge of writing such good history is such a condensed format doesn't lend itself to hasty work and that we should perhaps take comfort from Osprey's uncommercial attitude…

Regards,

Ticker

SauveQuiPeut08 Feb 2006 3:56 p.m. PST

Jena/Auerstadt 1806 has already been done by Peter Hofschroer…it's the 1807 campaign that is tantalising by its non-appearance.

Will they, won't they?
Will they, won't they?

(bated breath)

John Cook10 Feb 2006 7:18 p.m. PST

Just to do Opsrey justice I have now had a reply from them.

The only two Napoleonic titles in the offing are the Mamelukes and Scouts, both of which we already know were commissioned some time ago.

There are no plans to produce anything on napoleonic Wurttemberg. So the rumours I heard were incorrect.

So it seems a bit bleak on the Napoleonic front for the foreseeable future.

Gerry – Nop chance. They have taken a strategic decision to bow to the US market. Initially, they took a bath with the fall in the North American peso, but as a sensible "hedge", they now have placed more of their costs (authors, artists) into the US and so, it will be US subjects.

There are no new Nap titles listed – and we are just marking the 200th anniversary of Eylau!
