Gal Gadot's casting as Cleopatra in an upcoming biopic has ignited a debate about whitewashing and ancient history…

Cleopatra was Greek, descended from Ptolemy, one of Alexander the Great's generals. I would thing Gadot looks Mediterranean enough to not be worried about it.

Anyone bitching about it has no clue as to Cleopatra's ethnicity.

Revisionist history stirring things up again – look at the foul-up when Oliver Stone cast Rosario Dawson as Alexanders wife.

More tempests in teacups.

The faux outrage is entertaining.

Not only was Cleopatra Greek, the Ptolemaic dynasty followed the time honored tradition of "keeping the bloodline pure". Or, incest.
Very Targaryean.

Gal Gadot fits the role perfectly, as others have pointed out, Cleopatra was in fact Greek. If someone want a to do a biopic about the Queen of Sheba, there is a role for a black actress.

Facts don't matter.

However, if "they" ever get around to filming "Flashman on the March", I would highly recommend Halle Berry as Uliba Wark. That's how I envisioned her.

Unless she's from Yemen (ancient Saba). grin

Cleopatra was as Greek (Hellene) as they come. She probably communicated with Caesar and Antonius in Greek since it was de riguer for educated Patrician Romans to learn good Greek.

Like all actresses, Gal Gadot will likely be a better looking Cleopatra than the real person. I'm not surprised that Fox News runs this story – are we sure they didn't also generate it?

John, as usual you are right on the money!

I agree, John – what the world needs now are Flashman movies. Lots of them.

But who to play Flash Harry?

John the OFM14 Oct 2020 11:07 a.m. PST

John Cleese as an elderly Flashman in the Boxer Rebellion. He already played 95% Flashman as the Sheriff in Silverado.

But now, for the younger dashing Flashman, I suggest Rupert Friend.

John the OFM14 Oct 2020 11:36 a.m. PST

With Taylor Swift playing every single woman who Flashman wronged.

Basha Felika14 Oct 2020 2:46 p.m. PST

I'd always hoped Catherine Zeta Jones would play Lola Montez.

But who would be cast as Elspeth?

Basha Felika15 Oct 2020 1:00 a.m. PST

And Amanda Barrie remains the definitive Cleopatra

John the OFM15 Oct 2020 8:58 a.m. PST

I didn't like Cleopatra in HBO's Rome.
I don't know why, but it was easy to see why Vorenus had Pullo fill in for him.

John the OFM15 Oct 2020 9:00 a.m. PST

To Rupert Friend.
If you get the part and it turns into a mega hit franchise, don't forget the little people like me who gave the recommendation.

And people complained about Gal Gadot being Cleopatra.
You should see it now.
