Now that my Army of Montrose is very definitely happening my thoughts turned to what colour palette I would need, and in the process I had a look at some of the wargamer facts™ that haunt anyone setting out to paint a Royalist Scots army link

So, the truth is, "nobody knows".

My good friend Dave's Montrose army (who've beaten my poor Covenanters several times) look like this:

They're a dour lot but I imagine they, look Dave himself, look quite cheerful as they give Argyll's boys another pasting.

Great looking army. I use Project Auldearn site for inspiration, even though I can't do that in 15mm.

There isn't a single period of Scottish history I think is fun to game, but every time I see a nicely painted Scottish army I want one. Probably the same mysterious force that gives me a taste for scotch whiskey.

My compliments to your friend Dave, ochoin. That's a nice looking army. I've seen (and painted!) more complicated tartans, but a single color of basic stripes looks just fine. I'll keep that in mind next time I attempt Scots (if ever…). Are those 20mm or 1/72 figures?

They look like Tumbling Dice 20mm. Very nice.

TD they are.

The interesting thing is my Covenanter army are TD, often use exactly the same figures but thanks to different paint jobs, they look quite different.
