Le Tonnant was launched in Toulon in 1789 but after a short career in the French navy and capture at the Battle of the Nile in 1798; following an heroic stand with her captain propped up in a barrel on his own quarterdeck, having had his leg and both arms removed by round shot, she became HMS Tonnant.
Going on to see service at Trafalgar, the Chesapeake and New Orleans campaigns, this great ship has a history second to none.
