"Despite the heavy Armenian armoured losses, the key lessons from the videos Azerbaijan has published online are not about armour. Rather, they reflect how the density of sensors on the modern battlefield is changing the balance in combined arms warfare.

Before tackling this, some myths need to be challenged. There is a tendency for Western soldiers to dismiss what can be learned from these incidents because the videos show limited tactical proficiency being displayed by Armenian troops. This is misguided for several reasons. The snippet videos usually show armour manoeuvring, when camouflage is hard to maintain, and which Western forces would equally have to do if they were to affect the outcome of battle. The videos have also been selected as examples of Azerbaijani successes. However, there is actually a lot of evidence of Armenian forces digging in, concealing positions, and deploying decoys, of which at least two were struck by Azerbaijani forces…"

Excellent article.

War has always been about information. The new systems allow obtaining information far more easily than in the past.

And the quicker and more accurate the information, the greater the advantage.

IMO the critical failure in Syria, Libya and Armenia has been the complete inability of air defences to stop drone attacks including modern Pantsir and BUK systems.

And if the AD network fails everything is at risk!

The problem s air defence is borderline non-existent in the west as western doctrine emphasised air superiority over thel ast several decades.

Now if the Russian supplied advanced and numerous layered systems can't stop drones, what chance does the west?

Good information !

And +1 arealdeadone

There are some good lessons there that any army should take heed/look into. And again with more newer higher tech devices on the battlefield it could and does change some things. And some of the newer tech will all be part of the combined arms team, etc.

Back to WWI?
No one is that tactically in competent, even most of the militaries of the Mid East much of Africa.

The one other thing I find interesting is that save the US and Israel, most western forces in general haven't embraced UAVs en masse, let alone UCAVS and loitering munitions.

The emphasis is still on dwindling numbers of fighter jets which are increasingly being acquired in negligible numbers due to cost.

How good is the electronic warfare used by both sides? One wonders how much top EW is being used in all these conflicts?

I'd imagine in this conflict it may generally not be top of the line.
