Remembering Marx WOW Figures

If you were a kid in the 1960s who loved history and toy soldiers, you probably had a WOW figure!

I have been slowly building the TYW Swedish army at Lutzen. I have decent painting sources for this army. I am interested in building the Imperialist army for the same battle but I am stymied by what figures to use (I used mainly TAG for the Swedes) and how to paint them (uniform colours etc.) Anyone has suggestions about where to find good source material for Imperialist look? Thanks for your help.

TAG do Thirty Years War "Germans" who would seem to be your first port of call for figures to match your TAG Swedes. They've even got personality figures of Wallenstein, Pappenheim and some other commanders – link

There's a recent Helion book on the Imperial army, "In the Emperor's Service" by Laurence Spring. It has some colour plates of troops and a list of known regimental coat colours – there are very few Imperial uniform colours known. There's also a couple of Ospreys by Vladimir Brnardic, though I'd say they're not as good as Brzezinski's Swedish ones.

The main distinction, of course, was that Imperial sashes were red, and plumes often seem to have been red as well.

There is also a painting guide at link

Thanks GurKhan. That helps greatly.

The painting the Battle of Lutzen has a too high perspective to be of much use.

Hi Marcus, Lutzen is a really interesting battle to relight. The club I belong to demo'd it at Salute last year and there are details and pictures on my blog:

For figures TAG has a very good selection, as already mentioned. It is also worth looking at the Horcata site which is a small one man outfit that does some very characterful TYW figures:

I would also suggest looking at Warlord Games. Not only do they do plastics, which are great for conversions, but they also have some great metal packs, In particular I'm thinking of their musketeers with rests. It is worth noting that they have just come out with a new set of TYW command figures which go with the existing personalities. Very useful.

I have not yet painted many up, but 1898 Miniatures have recently started doing a TYW range. Aimed at being ‘ Spanish' troops I would suggest they would be equally suitable for any TYW army.

For books I would recommend the recent Helion focused on Wallenstein and his army (In the Service of the Emperor) and I have also heard good things about the uniform info in the Helion book on the Bavarian army of the TYW. The Osprey on Lutzen is definitely worth having if you've not got it already.

Someone has already mentioned red sashes for the Imperial officers, and I also notice that Peter Snayers seems to favour red socks for Imperial troops. This could be just some artistic convention, but I'm definitely doing this for my next Imperial foot unit :D .

Thanks CTG. I took a good look at your Lutzen game as posted on TMP. Very impressive. I am not a great fan of the Warlord Plastic TYW figures but will take a look at the their metal specialties. I have the Osprey Lutzen book but have ordered the Laurence Spring book on Wallenstein's army based on yours and GurKhan's recommendation.

Don't forget the miniatures from Horcata (Bohemian Miniatures). They are made with the TYW in mind and fit quite well with Warlords miniatures. And as it was already written, there are quite nice metal miniatures from Warlord. Some are quite dynamic. I like their Wallenstein very much for example, even if he needs a different horse. But for Cuirassiers on the other hand I would rather go for Horcata. The same could also be said about TAG's Cuirassiers.
