Greetings all. I've never played ACW before but the Perry Line of miniatures has got me interested in dipping my toe into the waters.

I don't own any period rules beyond Black Powder and from what I've seen of posts here at TMP, most members aren't a fan of BP for the ACW.

I should say what I'm looking for is not a set of rules that would cover entire battles but rather a set that would cover one of the most important areas of a battle.

I'm looking to use 28mm minis and I'd prefer something that has unit basing similar to Black Powder ie. Units in 2 ranks.

I'd also prefer something that's fairly easy to learn as opposed to overly detailed.

Thanks for any and every recommendation.

U.K.

Osprey rules Rebels & patriots is an easy to learn set of fast play rules that are perfect for club play and conventions. People who have never played the rules before pick it up quickly and are able to follow them by the end of the game! it's a skirmish (or as I play them, big skirmish) set of rules but the figure ratio is flexible.

I have played BP for ACW with the Glory Hallelujah supplement and it was fun. Felt right got the period and we got a result in 3 hours.

I have also played RF&F and like that too, but there is more looking up of charts and a slower game so better for a weekend than a week night.

Thanks both for the reply.

Brian, thanks for the link. I'm sure you know you're in the minority here at TMP for someone who likes Glory Hallelujah. I'm glad to see a positive review for it for a change.

That would actually be a good set for me since I already own BP.

I'll take a look at some more reviews of it.

I have rules summaries of many ACW rule sets here:

Another vote for OTR.

I think Black Powder is a good quick set of,rules, for ACW. I just picked up these rules, which I think are very good. This is the link to the pdf version, but the hard copy is very well designed.

Hi

I also like the BP for ACW with the Glory Hallelujah supplement.

Is Brother Against Brother still being published? Our group had a lot of fun with those rules back in the day.

No, but you can order a PDF of Brother Against Brother

Most members don't like most rules. If you have BP and you like it, there is no reason to try to find something else.

You might want to try "The Glint of Baynets" by the author of "The Sword and the Flame". I have not played it but The Sword and the Flame" are fun rules easy to learn. I am looking forward to trying someday.

"A Glint of Bayonets" is by Larry Brom, author of "The Sword and the Flame" but bears little resemblance to it. AGoB is a tactical level game where the basic maneuver unit is the infantry regiment and artillery battery. It is a fun, easy to learn game and will give one a good result. We've played a number of ACW games and finished within 4 hours without a problem. You can use 25/28mm, 15mm or 6mm figures without any problem as scalable rulers are included. The rules are available from sergeants3.com .

Our group plays BP Glory Hallelujah and Regimental F&F. We like both.

I've used A Glint of Bayonets with 54mm as well.

Again, thanks for all the input. I decided to take a chance on Glory Hallelujah and I ordered the download for a $10 USD investment. So no worries if it doesn't pan out.

Cheers.

We've played a whole heap of On To Richmond in 15mm and 28mm ever since it was published in the Courier back in the '80s. Its the ancestor of Fire and Fury – simpler, cleaner and easier.

Another set of rules, The Devil to Pay, that I ran across in Board Game Geek:

The scale is right on for 28mm regimental unit games and the price is easy on the wallet (free download).

Brom's 'Glint' rules are great for a 3 hour or so game.

I've run these rules dozens of times and always have had
positive comments from the players involved.

I am a big Fire and Fury fan but that is for my 15mm – for 28mm I use Black Powder for SYW/Napoleonics. I have used Black Powder for ACW and it was fun – if you starting and have the rules/know the rules I would for sure use BP
