lots of useful advice. I have used boxes with building fronts from the net and from various paper buildings and brick sheets. Here from a Playmobil zombie game.

For more generic box buildings, a billion years ago I bought an order (a bunch) of 6"x6"x3" shipping boxes and a bunch of textured scrapbook paper to make some modular city buildings. Then I printed doors and windows on sticker paper and … poof! … paper city.
