Gentlemen:
I'm finishing off my Motor Rifle Units for Combined Arms. I mark my 'command units' with having the commanders unbuttoned.

My T-72 unit has a commander with the iconic Russian soft tank commander's helmet.

I think the Platoon and Company Commanders dismount with the dismount force. Do other command decision or Combined Arms players mark the vehicles or the dismount units as the 'command stand?'

Would the Motor Rifle Unit commanders have the soft helmet or an 'infantry' helmet?

For a BMP-2 equipped unit: I think the commander rides in the hatch behind the driver. Anyone know better?

For a BTR-70 unit, I think the commander would be in the right front hatch. Anyone know better?

well I don't know everything. If there was a question about a commander of an artillery I could help ;)
I guess only infantry riding the BMP had steel helmets, it is difficult to have earphones with them, so I guess soft helmet is an answer – at least while he rides in a transport.
BMP-2 has 2 commander seats, I guess junior commander will be behind the driver, unit commander will be in the turret.
There's an article on the subject but you need to google translate it link
I think you're right about BTR 70, at least under normal circumstances the commander will be on the right to the driver in the front row.

It would appear that BTR & BMP crew (driver, gunner, commander) wear the soft tanker helmets – my expectation would be that if the commander dismounts, he'd swap out of the tanker helmet and put on a steel pot – my squad leader (back in the 80s in our M113) wore a CVC while in the track so he could communicate with the driver and TC – then put on his helmet when he dismounted with us
