Hi all, I'm very tempted to get some 28mm Marines and NVA but I would like to know if Empress, TAG and Gringo 40 mix well together sizewise? Thanks for your reply. |

They don't. TAG is bulkier than Empress and Gringo is a bit on the big size too. here is a comparison: link |

Thank you Repaint. That is very helpful and exactly what I needed to know. I will probably follow your lead and cut the bases of the Gringo's off too. Thanks again. |

Empress' Vietnamese are sculpted proportionately smaller than the Americans/Australians (not the weapons or gear, just the bods) and, as far as I know, the only range that does that. Gringo's NVA/VC are just too large even with the base cut off, but they do make excellent MENA-types. YMMV. |

Use the Empress figures for the guys in the field surviving on MRE's for months on end and the VC/NVA/villagers and ARVNs. Use the TAG and Gringo figures for the well-fed REMFs in the rear. Just sayin' B |

Thanks gentlemen. I'm waiting for Empress to release their chopper gunners in a couple of weeks to place my order there but in the meantime I have ordered one squad of Gringo 40's Marines. If I keep them in together in one squad on the wargames table and don't mix them with Empress I guess it will be ok. |

I have occasionally mixed them in dioramas eg The Dong Ba Tower, below. Crouching or kneeling figures ideally, disparity in size is less obvious. The problem always highlighted is the weaponry of course. The Empress figures go to the back and actually add to any three dimensional effect. Paul Hicks is a great scupltor, but some of his faces are a bit "syndromal". I still gaze at his Saxon Garde du Corps on my shelves in awe, however. Your challenge might be to decide what scale chopper you use. Much talk here recently about the pilots dwarfed by a 1/48 scale Sikorski. Naturally I think. I know talking abot mm for figures and scale for kit and vehicles in not quite correct, but I work on 28mm being 1/56.

Great looking diorama Deadhead! I was able to get a good deal on a 1/48 scale Sikorsky and a Huey and I am kind'a hoping that the TAG chopper crew will fit since everyone tells me that TAG is on the big size. If not, I can probably 3D print some crew if I can find the right STL files. |

See a very recent discussion on the existing Chopper crews; TMP link Although I post all the new releases of Gringos40 figures for Ged (he admits he has not even my IT skills….my three sons laugh at that) I remain neutral and can still see how Empress Figures can work with them, but I will be honest as to which I favour. There is one figure, lifting an ammo belt for an M60 off his back, while lying prone, which I simply stare at and try to work out how he was done in one piece. Paul Hicks has talent. Some G40 figures are a bit stumpy, but only a few, Full Metal Miniatures are even bigger with weird helmet shapes that take much work (but look great with work), Empress are really sharply cast, but small for modern scale creep tendencies and those faces are a bit …well what was that film about the Everglades and folk overdoing the interbreeding? Top picture shows a big Full Metal Mins Figure VS Empress. Below are identical poses from Empress (unpainted) against Gringos40

Empress and G40 don't look too bad next to each other. A bit bulkier the G40 but not all humans are the same size anyway. Reminds me of the "really big Marine" in the Stan Ridgeway song Camouflage. :-) The G40 also seems to have a really thick base. If I cut that off then the difference in height will already be a lot less obvious. Thanks for your help deadhead, I really appreciate it. |
