I'm a fan of the old Citadel Snakebite Leather paint. It was very versatile.
But when I popped into a local game store, I found that is now one of the obscenely priced "Contrast" paints. And it isn't even the same shade.

Is the old style Snakebite Leather available? Or is there a suitable substitute?

Try Folk Art Raw Sienna. It's a bit lighter but, close.

Check with the game shop. My understanding is that they sometimes use the same name for a contrast paint and a regular one. But I agree it's pretty much raw sienna.

check Coat d'Arms, which is available in the USA from Scale Creep.

I think they re-named it Balor Brown – the local Warhammer store has it for I believe $5.40 USD Canadian or so

Here's an old paint mixing guide to making Snakebite Leather:

1:1:2:1 parts, using

Blood Red : Enchanted Blue : Sunburst Yellow : White

Hope that helps… ;-)

Is there any better example of GW and their ridiculous antics to keep us buying new stuff?

Bandolier24 Sep 2020 7:52 p.m. PST

That conversion chart is "best match" with the new paints but many are way off.

Use Vallejo Game Color – Leather Brown.

As Wackamole9 said, check out Coat d'Arms. I believe they are literally the original Citadel paint range.

Grimmnar24 Sep 2020 8:55 p.m. PST

Well Mike, not sure how ridiculous if you are still buying the new stuff.

check Coat d'Arms:

Yup – they are the same paints and in the old style flip top bottles.

As a fellow snakebite leather fan, the new balor brown is not a good match. I've used both Vallejo game color and Coat d'Arms as substitutes.

Rarely but GW stuff. Prefer Vallejo and Coat d'Arms.

But you're right, somebody keeps buying their stuff!

Still have half a bottle left !!

Must be nearly 40 years old but I used it last week for archer's braces.

I'm also a big fan of the original colour and have been searching for a replacement for years.

Good luck and keep us informed of any new developments.

Yes unfortunate that GW quit making it, though I haven't looked at their paint line in a long time – because they keep changing them and because they've designed their paint pots to dry out.
Vallejo game color leather brown or coat d'arms barbarian leather ok substitutes, with cda covering a little better. By the time I paint something as small as a mini with washes and highlights, the base color doesn't matter a lot.
