I went on a little nostalgia tour after finding this kit at a garage sale. It took me back to when I was a kid building models with my Dad. Then I started picking up other models with fixed undercarriage and spats. Things got out of hand link

Now I will end up needing a bigger showcase.

Out-of-control wargame purchases? How could this ever happen?!

Wackmole922 Sep 2020 7:24 p.m. PST

Sound like a pulp Adventure airfield in the making.

Yup, it has happened. Trying to be more disciplined now but there are lapses…all to frequently, especially with Wargames Atlantic releases. *sigh*

Yep – with WWI biplanes for Wings of Glory – acquired about 50; when we moved I pared them down to the 12 I actually use

jdpintex23 Sep 2020 8:46 a.m. PST

Isn't this normal? I don't get the question.

The photos make for a great nostalgia trip.

Years ago I had a "thing" about the Finnish Airforce in WWII. Then it was anything to do with Pearl Harbour in model form. These days it is 2emeDB in Paris 1944.

Fixed undercarriage aircraft and deathtraps make quite a combination. I would add a Vildebeest.

I collected enough Hawk 75s and Fulmars to dogfight with them (over Mers el Kebir). I have since started adding the planes to fight the air battles of Operation Torch. I might be the only wargamer in the world who thinks any of this is a fun idea. I'm still looking for 1/200 scale Martin Marylands…

Your collection really needs a Blackburn Skua. It didn't do anything well, and was fugly besides. Definite "loser" airplane.

Yes – I'm now into 1/100 Cold War jets!

Anton Ryzbak24 Sep 2020 6:57 a.m. PST

Great, now I need a Vildebeest and a Skua!!!

This keeps getting bigger

Yellow Admiral, calling a Skua fugly is being too kind by half! It should have been rejected on appearances alone.

I have only narrowly avoided the interwar aircraft mania myself. There are a lot of good reasons to resist such a niche obsession, but I very nearly lose my resolve every time I see the Plan Orange "Pacific Jutland" naval collection that I bought from Virtual Scratchbuilder. There's a whole chorus of little voices in my head:

"Those are some really cool planes."
"Billy Mitchell was right, and you need to bomb and torpedo those battleships from the sky."
"Those 'what if' dogfights with 1930s carrier planes would be really interesting."
"Wouldn't a yellow air force be fun to paint?"
"Many of these planes would be useful for gaming the 2nd Sino-Japanese war."
"How tall is King Kong in 1/144 scale?"

If it's happening to anyone right now, I have two boxes of models I am not going to build.

Anton Ryzbak25 Sep 2020 7:19 a.m. PST

etotheipi,

What sort of models? I have quite a few on my list(s) that I am still seeking

The Skua? It was a reasonable dive bomber, which in British hands made it almost unique. Made a mess of that German Cruiser in Norway (Karlsruhe? Must check that. Later edit; Oh heck. It was Konigsberg). Did you mean the Roc, its turret derivative?

Anton Ryzbak25 Sep 2020 2:53 p.m. PST

deadhead,

Does somebody make a kit of the Roc?

That would be sublime

You must tell us how you are getting on.

Firstly this is a very imaginative posting

Secondly we are all bored stiff right now.

What kind of loony goes for a fixed undercarriage with spats? Tell the truth I would, if I was not tied up with Prussian cavalry 1815 and Free French in Paris 1944.
