I was perusing the Flames of War section at a local hobby store in Georgia. The employee, youngish 20s,is telling another shopper/gamer that Historical gamers are all snobs. I figured that he was talking about some 'button counters' and jumped in and said, "we're not all snobs" He looked at me and said "So I could run my blue tanks in your game? " "Ah no" I answered "See no creativity in historical gaming unlike 40k and fantasy" he lamented to his friend I could not resist, "40k and fantasy Sigmar? You mean where hardly anyone paints their minis?" "Well in tournaments they have to be painted" he quickly answered. " So I guess that is why I see no tournaments at your store?" |

He's an idiot. Buy your Flames of War or Citadel paints and leave. Ask him, if you must, what the point of blue or scarlet tanks is. |
John the OFM | 22 Sep 2020 7:08 a.m. PST |
By the way, if you answer "We're not all snobs!" you're conceding the argument to him, and are fighting on his terms. Ask him why 40K armies look so stupid. Ask him if he would be allowed to use a "blue tank" in a Dark Angels army, or a scarlet one in a Direwolves army. Ask him if Orks can use Ultramarine … personnel carriers. Or Dark Eldar jet skis. |

John … you make some good points … Also I still and never will paint my Sci-fi models in circus colors … 🤡🎪 |
cavcrazy | 22 Sep 2020 8:39 a.m. PST |
I have never found any gamer to be a snob, historical or fantasy. That being said I am a historical gamer and have no interest in the fantasy games….Wow, maybe I'm the snob? Time to reflect upon ones self. |
McKinstry | 22 Sep 2020 8:46 a.m. PST |
If insisting figures in a game I am putting on be painted, consider me a snob. BTW – I would think early war British tanks in a Caunter scheme count as blue. |
M1Fanboy | 22 Sep 2020 9:14 a.m. PST |
And this is why I don't as a matter of course engage 40K gamers. When many of them don't even paint their armies? What's the point of discussing the finer points of what colors to paint one's armies? |
Dagwood | 22 Sep 2020 9:31 a.m. PST |
Apparently the Caunter scheme didn't contain blue. There was a recent post here which suggested it was a mistake by some museum that has been propagated over the years. What me ? A rivet counter ? Never ! Well, perhaps a bit … But the Caunter scheme should be colourful enough for anyone ! |
John the OFM | 22 Sep 2020 9:39 a.m. PST |
I have known Caunter discussions to turn violent in a matter of seconds. "Blue" is a trigger word. I'm just glad that I don't have to paint my Honeys in Caunter for Gazala. I ran out of Light Medium Stone. If you want colorful, do German Great War aeroplanes. A pink DVII! |

Real German men flew RED planes. |

@McKinstry If insisting figures in a game I am putting on be painted, consider me a snob. +1 Hey, you say you want color?!?! Try pretty much any European army from 1700 to 1815. Even worse, try a few 15th-16th century Swiss or Landsknecht pike blocks. I got yer color right HERE!!! Snob indeed…I waggle my pinky in your visage!! |
Brian Smaller | 22 Sep 2020 11:36 a.m. PST |
Well I did once see an Italian WW2 army where the tanks were all painted Ferrari red. And I had a Pink Panther. So no, we are not all snobs. |
Thresher01 | 22 Sep 2020 11:36 a.m. PST |
OFM, blue tanks are for the good guys, red ones are for the bad ones, and pink ones are for the militant pacifists. I thought everyone knew that. In this case, wear snobbery as a badge of honor. |

Some gamers are snobs. Because gamers are human, and some humans are snobs. But most gamers are nice guys. |
Sajiro | 22 Sep 2020 12:18 p.m. PST |
I have a pink Panther. It drives my Armor officer friends crazy, but my daughter loves it.

Mike, I hope that wasn't at Gigabites. Of course I've had FoW players call me a snob, because I play historical WWII scenarios, so there's that. Mark |

You want color, India is good at that.

See no creativity in historical gaming unlike 40k and fantasy 40K is the least creative game I've seen. Well, at least tournament, sanctioned 40K. Even outside that, there are a ton of assumptions that go with 40K. 40K has strict colour schemes for factions, as noted above. But at a deeper level, who fields a contingent of Orks with a Space Marine force (other than me, I mean)? What historical force did not recruit and field other "factions" in their forces at one time or another? even former/future enemies? … sorry … especially former/future enemies? You should go back to the store on 40K day and face the employee with a SM force that has a (DKOK) Commissar command unit and uses Tau vehicles to deploy Ork shock troops. Oh, yeah, that new Necro sniper dude, too. There's your blue tank. |

Leadjunky | 22 Sep 2020 7:40 p.m. PST |
I guess I am kind of a gaming snob. I like figures to be painted, at least decent looking terrain, and rules to at least somewhat represent the period and tactics. Scenario over points as well. See…. snob. 😁 |
The Tin Dictator | 22 Sep 2020 9:07 p.m. PST |
I'm a historical gamer. I require that any figure in a game on my table be painted. If its not painted, it sits on the sideline. And the paint job should at least attempt to be historical. Its not snobbish to expect these things. If you think it is, because you can't be bothered, then you're the one being the twit. |
McWong73 | 23 Sep 2020 3:07 a.m. PST |
That was a good comeback about the tournaments D6. |

I have a friend that claims to be a "game bigot". He only plays games he's designed. The problem is that they are pretty good so I play his game and ignore him. Wolfhag |
Yesthatphil | 24 Sep 2020 1:59 p.m. PST |
Like the OFM said, he's an idiot. There's not a lot of point in disecting that (all the evidence points to him being an idiot, including arguing with a customer rather than apologising for being rude) Just don't shop there. Phil |
Legion 4 | 25 Sep 2020 9:13 a.m. PST |
A bright yellow T26 A gold KV1 A pink Matilda 2 A pink, purple and lime green Tiger They could be used for 40K ! They'd fit right in ! |
