….Standard Assault Rifle

"In a surprise move, Germany plans to ditch its Heckler & Koch G36 rifle in favor of a new weapon from a lesser-known local manufacturer, C.G. Haenel. The decision on the future assault rifle was disclosed yesterday, September 14, 2020, by the Germany Defense Ministry, during a session in Berlin's federal parliament.

The weapon that's been selected is Haenel's fully automatic AR-15/M4 patterned MK556 in 5.56mm caliber. A semi-automatic version of the same weapon, the CR223, is already used by certain police forces in Germany and law-enforcement agencies in other countries…"

Thats not a "ditch" of the G36, its about the scheduled replacement for the gun. Your "also" link covers the story.

As Haenel is a pretty small manufacturer there were now some concerns raised about their ability to produce 120.000 rifles in time.

Didn't Haenel make the original STG43?

They can take their time making them, I doubt if the German Army is going to use them in the near future.

So … when do we all get to buy surplus G36s?

Haenel did indeed produce the first Assault gun in WW2, but the company now bearing this name is a refounding with money based in the UAE.

@Wolfhag
The Bundeswehr is currently active in 11 missions outside the Nato. I am sure they will need to be properly armed. The main reason for its current condition is that it got the making and funding of a territorial army, but politicians used them for interventions for the last 20 years – which put different strains on the equipment without the proper funding, so they had to cannibalize the equipment. Well, there are other reasons… some of them are at the root of the decision to buy 120.000 rifles from a company that cannot produce them, too.
