Is that a battleaxe the warrior on the left in the 3rd picture is using? I didn't know they were popular in Japan, that is the first depiction of one I have seen.

Axes were in use by samurai although not the most common of weapons.

They also appear in the occasional mon and on wikipedia you can find a picture of an example which is very similar to the one in use by that miniature.
