To start off, I have played a fair share of "wargames" designed for PC or ported to PC but have no experience on those physically done on tabletop so I might be missing stuff obvious to the people here.

Lately, I've been reading up on the "Spanish Fury: Actions" ruleset, which I believe also serves as a ruleset for "Very Civile Actions" from the same charitable maker.
The scale of the game is a fair bit larger than a skirmish game, essentially Battalion vs Company size. So it came to my attention that if I take 2 shot companies and 1 pike company, each 4 squadrons strong, then that makes an adequately sized ECW era P&S regiment of 400~600 men. However, the ruleset has no entry regarding protection of shot against cavalry in the open if the shots and pikes choose to form up as a full regiment in close order.

Am I missing something? If not, are there house rule examples that I can take a look?

Howdy Wanderlust,

VCA is not really meant to portray regimental tactics which are meant for field battles. The scale here is more for small actions like sorties, raids, or operations in smaller theatres away from the larger armies (requisitioning fodder from villages!). You're really looking at company tactics here.

So if you want to protect your shot from horse, put them behind a fence! You could also put your pike company forward and hover around it for protection.

I hope that helps,
TPC
