"The world knows the Republic of Kiribati as a very low-lying nation in the mid-Pacific that is in danger of inundation as the climate changes and sea levels rise.

Much less is known about its strategic location and the attention now being paid to it by Beijing, which has proposed large-scale dredging to reclaim land from lagoons. The aims are to raise the height of atolls and create land for industrial development, including two major ports. The massive works will likely be carried out by the same fleet of dredgers used by China to build artificial islands in its aggressive expansion into the South China Sea, and will almost certainly cause the same severe destruction of coral reefs in Kiribati.

Australia will ignore this activity at its cost…"

Ah, our daily 'fear the evil China' post!

15mm and 28mm Fanatik11 Sep 2020 7:10 p.m. PST

Considering that the homes and lives of 120,000 Kiribatians are at risk of being submerged under water due to climate change, the destruction of a few reefs in the reclamation effort is of lesser concern.

But it benefits evil China in her quest to take over the world. Therefore we must oppose it.

fear the evil China' post!
We they certainly proved they generally can't be trusted in many cases, e.g. COVID. They are building their military and spend very large amounts of money, etc., to do it. They must be planning on using that bigger, better military even of only for sabre rattling. But we can't count on that is their only intention, yes?

I'm very afraid of the Chinese… (smile)

Yeah, those Uighers and citizens of Hong Kong sure have nothing to worry about, nothing at all.

People wonder why the world did nothing about the Nazis before the war. Here you have proof positive.

More than a million in re-education camps- nothing to see here.

The wives and children of the men sent off to those camps assigned Chinese husbands/ fathers to live with them- nothing to see here.

Hong Kong rights nullified- nothing to see here.

Tibet and now Nepal being overrun- nothing to see here.

India pressured to give up territory- nothing to see here.

Foreign press threatened with prison or expulsion- nothing to see here.

President for life installed with barely limited powers- nothing to see here.

Yep, China is AOK.

1) Find shallow reef area
2) Dump a million barges of garbage in the middle to build it up
3) Instant island!

TGerritsen, don't forget the members of the Falun Gong religious order with thousands of followers who are being imprisoned and harvested for organ transplants -nothing to see here either.

China had been indoctrinating and re-educating its citizens in compliance to the State as well as cracking down on dissent since the days of Mao Zedong in the late 1940's so it really isn't anything new. It ain't right but this alone isn't enough to declare war on China, so the West can only continue to apply pressure through sanctions and economic isolation in an attempt to change its behavior unless China does something stupid like starting a war or physical genocide.

No real surprise there either. It has been general knowledge to many in the Intel and Military, AFAIK.
