I have just finished my fourth and last large infantry unit of old 1980s Minifigs Late Romans, this time choosing the Secundani Italiciani, a Legio Comitatensis.

I wanted a shield design that would be clearly different to the other units and feature white to tie in with white helmet crests – again as a change to the reds and yellows of the others.

Unfortunately, it proved a difficult pattern to paint with the red dots risking merging together so I was very glad to get them finished. The remaining infantry are a unit of skirmishing archers and two units of modern Legio Heroica for which I'll use transfers from Little Big Men.

More photos and explanation, as ever, on my blog.

Wow. Your units are simply beautiful. There is something very satisfying about the clan simplicity of old Minifigs when well painted. You don't get all the nooks and crannies of newer figures. Also, also they look so good when ranged together as units! Bravo! Well done!

Inspiring work, including the basing, which is brilliantly done.

Good brushwork and basing can make just about anything look good, but I have always had a soft spot for Minifigs. Especially in the Ancient and Medieval Periods.

I think the detail on those 15mm faces and shields is simply stunning. Whatever your method of painting is keep using it; it works!

Great looking figs and units! Thanks for posting. I may try a little harder on mine.
