The penultimate ship in my Spanish fleet box build now includes the 12-pounder 34-gun frigate Diana, heralded as the fastest sailing of the Mahonesas class of Spanish frigates.

The Diana spent much of her time on patrol and escort work in the Mediterranean before taking part in the battle of Cape St Vincent in 1797.

Looks superb!

Love your choice of colors for the hull and masts.

The flag and banner really make it pop.

Thanks for your comments chaps, much appreciated. The colour choices are all about recreating the art work of the period from contemporary artists adding in details of particular ships where known.

I am hoping the effect, when the models are on the table, will be to create the look of those paintings, with the ships enveloped in the smoke of battle.

The flags really do add the final touch as with land models of the period and I think reflects the very uniformity of the ‘age of reason' in a time before mass production. So you get a lot of men or ships dressed or painted very similarly but when you look closer there are noticeable differences and then you are drawn to a huge splash of colour from the various banners and flags – well that's the idea behind the look of the models.
