"To the very esteemed members of Space Force and other grand poohbahs of the United States government agencies who may have a say in this, I have one question for you: What the heck is wrong with you? I'm talking about the ranks of the Space Force!…"

Well of course he would know because he played a Captain on tv. One of the many problems with this country is lack of celebrity worship. We should be getting all of our advice from Hollywood actors. |

Well he is "CPT Kirk"! We need Space Force like a worm needs a spatula! Well just look at it as the Space Force is under the USAF like the USMC is under the USN. |

Frankly, I was disappointed from day one that the Space Force was not perceived as a "Naval" concept, with appropriate ranks, titles, etc. As a new Force (and I, at least, think it necessary and even inevitable) it needn't be slavishly modeled after ALL naval ranks, traditions, etc, but be unique wherever practical, based on the ultimate vision of space faring. As such, terms as "Captain," "Admiral," "Commodore," etc, would all be appropriate, but some personnel might be ranked as Marines and/or Army. And the idea of a cammo BDU is ludicrous. "Chocolate Chips" in Space? What are they going to blend in with? Space Dunes? It's a brand new, bouncing baby service, so has plenty of room to grow and develop its own traditions and practices, but let's not pretend we don't want it ultimately grow into "Star Trek!" And the idea of a cammo BDU is ludicrous. That's true of any service. Why do maintenance technicians working on a flight line need cammo? Or admin personnel working in an office. Does medical staff need cammo? Even front line soldiers and marines rarely need cammo. But all the above wear them. Unless you are special operations forces actively engaged in combat operations where stealth and concealment are critical, no one needs cammo. It just looks cool, that's why they wear it. |

Being a Grunt we need camo uniforms. |
Heedless Horseman | 29 Aug 2020 7:53 p.m. PST |
LOL! Not going to be many recruits to be a 'Security' Red Shirt! ;) Of course, camo is silly for SPACE…but it's a Uniform with procurement contracts…and does the job, as of now. NOT wanting to get into a 'fight', but, I would imagine that a DOWNED USAF Pilot would very much appreciate anything that might increase survival chances? :) 'Rear Echelon' servicemen CAN become 'Front Line' VERY QUICKLY when things go Bad! Give servicemen the best chance for the worst case. Oops, I used 'The M Word'! But, I do not think that many female personel would want to be in mini dresses, tights and kneeboots…NOT the females that I KNOW, anyway! LOL :( |

When did CONGRESS pass a bill authorizing the creation of a Space Force? I think I missed that. |

"Established by the United States Space Force Act, which was passed by the United States Congress as part of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020" |

Yes I remember seeing all about it in the News. Go Space Force !! Heedless Horseman +10 … Yes we need camo uniforms ! Why do maintenance technicians working on a flight line need cammo? Or admin personnel working in an office. Does medical staff need cammo? Even front line soldiers and marines rarely need cammo. But all the above wear them. Unless you are special operations forces actively engaged in combat operations where stealth and concealment are critical, no Easier and cheaper to issue everybody camo uniforms. Army and USMC units regardless may all become combatants. As Infantry and Tankers most certainly will if at war. And you don't have to be SF to be engaged in combat. Especially in insurgencies. Spent a lot of time in the "bush" with my 10+ years in the Infantry. Camo uniforms along with other techniques make you harder to see and in turn harder to hit and kill. |

Cam? Nahhhhh. You need silver catsuits and purple wigs. Once you have them, the aliens are helpless. Or maybe it was all that spinning round made them dizzy. |
Legion 4 | 31 Aug 2020 10:19 a.m. PST |
Just use the MACO camo uniforms from Star Trek Enterprise! It's a good a camo combat uniform as any, IMO … 😁 Even in later versions of ST they knew you had to have a component of actual combat troops deployable and trained as such. Not just sailors/naval personal with small arms, etc.,. link But of course the US Space Force really is more of a Orbital Security and Defense Force. Techies not Grunts … yet … |

Designer camouflage that the Army, Navy and worst of all, the Air Force indulged in twenty years ago convinced me that the Joints Chiefs have stock in the textile industry. |
Legion 4 | 25 Sep 2020 8:34 a.m. PST |
Well I liked most of the Army camo uniforms … even though after the BDUs, it changed frequently. So there may be some credence to the JCS & the Textile Industry. I.e. the military-industrial complex, etc. At one point when transitioning to the BDU, we where allowed to wear the old Fatigues or BDUs. Then later you could wear the BDU, Green or Camo Jungle Fatigues. So I usually wore the old jungle fatigues and jungle boots, I found those most comfortable and useful … And a lot of the new LTs thought they looked cool ! But by then I was an old CPT … |

Uniformity was the rally cry back when I was in the Army. Back in around 1978, they changed headgear to achieve uniformity. The head gear prior to that was a baseball cap in branch colors. So infantry had light blue, armor yellow, artillery bright red, medical dark red, etc. It actually made it easier to see if a scavenger from a different unit was in your motor pool or barracks area. So all camo regardless of work assignment. Uniformity. |

Pyrate Captain | 27 Sep 2020 7:40 a.m. PST |
Since we don't have a space "fleet", of anything but satellites and unmanned missiles, and are not likely to build any crewed spacecraft constituting a "fleet" anytime soon, our ground-based rank structure seems apropos. But the moment we achieve space "fleet-hood", I'll lobby my congressman to change to a naval rank structure immediately. I am anticipating this to happen sometime in my next two reincarnations. |
