"Burundi wants Germany and Belgium to pay €36.00 EUR billion ($42.6 billion) in reparations for colonial rule, media reports published on Sunday said.

The country's senate has put together a panel of experts to assess the damage done during colonialism and advise on the cost of damages, according to Radio France International.

The broadcaster said that once the amount has been decided, Burundi plans to send these recommendations to the German and Belgium governments…"

Are they going to claim reparations from themselves for killing each other in the 1990s-2000s?

Thresher0119 Aug 2020 4:16 a.m. PST

"FREE" money for everyone.

Just insert your reason here:___________________________

No one will be denied.

ALL funds received are subject to taxation, not to exceed 150% of the original amount provided.

And Belgium will claim double that amount for the ten Paras and the dozen civilians that were so brutally murdered.
If you were to know how they met their end you would throw up your lunch.

Congo should send Belgium a bill.

I think a lot of countries can make a claim to Italy for centuries of occupation by the Romans

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP23 Aug 2020 7:56 a.m. PST

😄😆😂🤣 That is very true ! The same could go for the UK, France, and a number of European countries. 😁

For that matter Italy should ask for money from the Germans[Germanic Tribes] for the Tuetoburg Forest link

Show me the $ money 💰💴💵💶💷💸💳 !!!!!!!

Congo should send Belgium a bill.

Why?
Did you too fall for the often voiced opinion that King Leopold was responsible for the atrocities in Congo?

If anyone should foot a bill it should be the UK.
Or didn't you know that the territory called 'Belgian Congo' was actually ran by a British company? The Anglo Belgian India Rubber Company. That Belgian part was a bit of a joke as 80-90£ of all shares were in British hands and thus 80-90% of all profits ended up in British banks.
It wasn't until an Irish Lord, Sir Roger Casement, denounced the gruesome activities, that British shareholders began massively dumping their shares.
Oh BTW Roger Casement was later hanged for his involvement in the Irish Rebellion.

Those evil colonialists. Reminds me of "what did the Romans ever do for us' by Monty Python: " 'All right… all right… but apart from better sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health … what have the Romans ever done for us?"

That was pretty funny. evil grin

But yes in many places in Africa and elsewhere the colonialists were not very humane, etc. But sadly that seemed the norm almost everywhere in the past.

oldjarhead24 Aug 2020 12:39 p.m. PST

Roger Casement was hanged for high treason, while Great Britain was at war with the German Empire. Casement was in Germany co-operating with the German Government to arm and supply a rebellion in Ireland, he was captured with a load of weapons.

When Congo became 'independent' they had 150.000Km of perfectly maintained railroad.
Nowadays there's barely 2500Km of rusty tracks.
85% of all hospitals are gone.
76% of all school are gone.
Congo has already been given financial aid to the tune of 63 billion Euro's over the years.
All gone.

arealdeadone25 Aug 2020 7:04 p.m. PST

Nigeria is the same. The Brits left much better infrastructure (and never committed those kind of atrocities as in DRC) and the Nigerians have just let it rot, plundered what they could and got back to the business of corruption, sectarian violence, tribalism and kleptocracy. Despite all the potential oil wealth, the country remains a borderline failed state.

I have even read articles by Nigerians pining for a return to British colonial rule.

lmntel27 Aug 2020 3:28 p.m. PST

Did Burundi as a state exist during the colonial occupation ?. Genuinely interested

oldjarhead27 Aug 2020 4:01 p.m. PST

In most of the former British colonies in Africa, they were left with roads, a court system and hospitals. After the British left they soon reverted to tribalism, corruption and violence (see Zimbabwe)

Some good information WillieB, arealdeadone and oldjarhead … Sadly it does not surprise me.

But aid still continues to flow to those regions and others as well …

Sadly, the aid is only going in to the pockets of some people not to the people

So very true and that has been going on in Africa, Central and South America, A'stan, etc., for a very, very long time.
