Hi Everyone,
Just thought I would share my experience working with the Sarissa North American MDF kits. I got these for my AWI project.

I wrote a blog post about it, where the buildings go from this

to this:

take a look why not?

Overall, the kits are nice but require some extra work.

I think you did a great job, and thanks for the explanation included in the post.

You can get laser cut shingles in several styles from thingsfromthebasement.
It's great for farting up plain laser etched roofs.
They also have 1/56 dollhouse furniture.

Great job. I'm not sure I would do wallpaper, but it looks great. grin

Things I never thought I'd hear…

thanks for looking everyone.

I liked the shingles because I didn't have to paint em.

There could be more realist options besides wallpaper, but I just wanted something to cover up the bare MDF juuuuust a little bit.
I was thinking that these are houses, not log cabins afterall.

dollhouse furniture would of been beyond the pail..
: )

Warbases in the UK do tiling sheets in several styles.

Those farmer's wives to get making some curtains.

Great stuff!

historygamer19 Aug 2020 7:48 p.m. PST

Do you mean Civil War? They look great but don't look like 18th century buildings to me. :-(

I actually thought about curtains but couldn't figure out how to make them easily. I then thought about window sills just using balsa wood for the interior but didn't have any, so it'll just have to wait or never get done.. I'm not even sure how often troops will actually be in the buildings anyway.

and close enough to AWI for wargaming purposes I think. : )

Thingsfromthebasement makes a great Captain William Smith house in both 28mm and 25mm.

If you google Battle Road or look at contemporary drawings of AWI buildings, the Sarissa models are pretty close.
I've yet to see a true "saltbox" house from anyone, though.

Wargame Tools have a nice selection of several manufacturers.

Those buildings look great.

historygamer24 Aug 2020 6:02 a.m. PST

There is a real lack of good 18th century buildings in all scales.

John the OFM24 Aug 2020 8:18 p.m. PST

I don't know about that, historygamer.

They don't carry nearly the full range of what their suppliers have, but they have a nice "can't go to convention" discount going on. Sarissa especially.
I might go instead with Sarissa for the "plantation house" with very low shipping.

Thingsfromthebasement has the Captain Smith house and North Bridge, in 15mm and 28mm.
Check out the other ranges, like Sleepy Hollow and Frostgrave. Mike Fink's keelboat!

I personally think we're entering a "Golden Age" of suitable 18th C buildings.

Renedra has a Church and a barn.

Thanks for checking out the post!

I'm aware of all the manufacturers that have been discussed. I even came here on TMZp asking for suggestions before my purchase. I actually thought there was a nice selection of buildings out there. Everything from log cabins, to houses, to large houses, and mansions. 😀

So I looked at the link John provided. I saw maybe two or so buidlings that would truly qualify as correct for 18th century (AWI). I saw a lot of awesome stuff on the site though. I'll try to look at the other sites as well.

I admit my historical accuracy standards may be higher than some. I kind of categorize them as: 1. spot on; 2. close enough; and, 3. not really. Of course it's up to the individual gamer to choose what is good enough for them. :-)

Glad you used the boards here Stew art, and posted your build pics too.

Sometimes TMP is spot on, close enough, or not really –

Historygamer-
For what its worth, I agree with you. Most of what's available is "off" for AWI. I think it results from much of the manufacturers coming from the UK. They've never seen the "real thing", of which there are still plenty existing.

But I am impressed by Foxtrot, ThingsfromtheBasement, and the small company patslasercuttings.nl/. These companies have clearly based their models on the real thing.
